Newport’s Annual Water Main Flushing to Begin Sunday, Runs Through May 8

The Newport Water Division will kick off its annual spring water main flushing program on Sunday, April 27, as part of its ongoing mission to ensure high water quality throughout Newport and Middletown.

Flushing will take place overnight between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. to minimize disruptions. Crews will post signs in affected neighborhoods ahead of the work. While flushing targets specific streets, neighboring areas may also notice temporary side effects such as water discoloration or reduced pressure.

Residents are advised to run cold water taps for 5 to 10 minutes—such as those in kitchens or bathrooms—if they experience discolored water. Limiting water use during the flushing window is also encouraged.

Week 1 of the program, from April 27 to May 1, includes Easton’s Point, The Point section of Newport, Warner Street, Broadway, Kay Street, Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, and the Historic Hill neighborhood. In Middletown, flushing will begin in Easton’s Point and move west toward Memorial Boulevard.

Week 2, from May 5 to May 8, will continue in Newport with flushing on Memorial Boulevard, Bellevue Avenue, Thames Street, Spring Street, Wellington Avenue, Harrison Avenue, Coggeshall Avenue, Carol Avenue, the Salve Regina University area, and Ocean Drive.

The schedule may shift due to weather conditions, and additional flushing may occur as needed to complete targeted areas.

For more information, residents can contact the Newport Water Division at (401) 845-5600.
