After an uncertain 10 days, it appears that the incoming Newport City Council has chosen a successor to Mayor Harry Winthrop. Multiple sources have confirmed that Councilor Jamie Bova has received pledges from Angela McCalla, Susan Taylor and Justin McLaughlin to secure the mayor’s seat.
Bova, 29, is a four year resident of Newport and was first elected to the Newport City Council in 2016. She is expected to call a caucus for next week to officially secure the votes to become mayor.
Bova works as an engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.
Bova finished 592 votes behind Jeanne Marie Napolitano, the presumptive front-runner to be mayor.
