58-year-old Mark Gruchy of Middletown, RI died early Sunday evening after a scuba diving accident near Ida Lewis Yacht Club.
Gruchy had been missing for about an hour before being discovered by bystanders floating unresponsive in the shallow waters near the yacht club. Newport Police, Newport Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to their 911 call and administered CPR.
Gruchy was transported to Newport Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
