Portsmouth police responded to Portsmouth High School Tuesday morning after a 911 call alerted them to a violent assault from a male intruder.
Marcus Schlip, 22, was reportedly banging on the gym door when a female teacher opened the door and directed him to the office. At that time, Schlip punched the teacher in the face knocking her down and kicking her several times.
Officers arrived on scene and found Schlip sitting in the main office where it was discovered that he had a large military style knife in his backpack.
Schlip has been identified as a former student and no motive for attack has been identified. there were no students involved or injured in the assault.
Schlip has been charged with assault, possession of a knife in commission of a crime and disturbance of public assemblies.
Schilp was arraigned in 1st Division District Court and was released on personal recognizance and ordered to undergo evaluation at Butler Hospital immediately.
The female teacher was transferred to a local hospital for evaluation of her injuries.
