Captain John P. Davis, Jr., USN (Ret.), 79, of Newport, RI passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2017 in Providence, RI. He was the beloved husband to Patricia F. McGinn Davis.
A devoted father to Nancy Hrbek and husband Stephen of Merrimack, NH, Colleen Adams and her husband Stephen of Melrose, MA, John P. Davis, III and his wife Christine Davis of Newport, RI, Elizabeth Davis of Ocala, FL, Michael Davis of Lake Wylie, SC, Jennifer Corbett and her husband Matthew of Merrimack, NH, Leo Davis and his wife Mary of West Orange, NJ; his 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, his sister Maureen C. Hull and husband L. Clinton Hull of Yarmouthport, MA, and many nieces and nephews also survive him. He is predeceased by daughter, Mary Davis Barwis.
Born March 3, 1938 in Newport, RI, he was a son of the late John P. Davis and Mary Sullivan Davis.
Jack was a graduate of Rogers High School (1955) and of Providence College (1960). He also attended Villanova Law School. He was a member of Hazard’s Beach, Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club, and the Redwood Library.
Jack was a highly decorated naval officer. During his distinguished career he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V”, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and numerous other honors and citations. Jack served three tours in Vietnam where he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal for deeds of valor and heroic conduct in combat.
Visiting hours are from 4-7 pm Friday, June 2, 2017 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at St. Joseph Church, Broadway and Mann Ave., Newport at 10am. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, R.I.
