George A. Jones, age 74, of Newport, RI passed away peacefully on October 6, 2018, at home surrounded by his loving family. George was born in Newport, RI on February 23, 1944 to the late Dorothy Bernice Gage. He was married to the love of his life, Regina (Regan) Jones for 42 years.
George was a graduate of Rogers High School. He was a member of the Newport Fire Department for 26 years (8-28-1966 to 10-17-1992). George was President of the Local 1080 from 1979 to 1981. He was very proud of his years of service to the community of Newport, RI.
George was a partner of O’Brien’s Pub with his brother-in-law, Tom Regan and Greg Fater. He was easily recognized by his famous mustache, aviator sunglasses, and welcoming smile.
George had a great sense of community and was generous to all.
George had a deep abiding love for Newport. He never started his day without a ride around the Ocean Drive. It was a rite of passage that when his children and grandchildren were born that then leaving the hospital they were taken on a ride around the Ocean Drive.
George was a member of the Retired Firefighters Association, Gooseberry Beach, an Auxiliary Member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Wanumetonomy Golf Club.
George will always be remembered for his love of family, love of life, and generous spirit.
George is survived by his wife, Regina and his children, Kristine Jones of Newport, RI, Megan Jones of Newport, RI, and Katie Jones of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aliyah and Julien Jones of Newport, RI. He will be missed by his faithful Golden-doodles, Dublin and Fergie.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s, Bob and Liz Regan (Matthew and Kerri) of Bethpage, NY: Andrew and Krista Regan (Jennifer and Patrick) of Jamestown, RI: Tom and Marie Regan (Maggie, Jim, Mollie, Maura, Madelyn) of Narraganset, RI: Theresa Regan-Gordon (Daniel) of Brooklyn, NY.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Gage, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Patrick and Marge Regan and his brother-in-law, Vincent Regan.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 9th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 10th at 11 am at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840.
Following the service there will be a procession around the Ocean Drive.
