Jaime M. Crowley, age 48, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA after a courageous battle with leukemia. He will be remembered as a loving father, devoted educator, and a kind-hearted member of the community whose selflessness and good humor endeared him to all who knew him.
Jaime, along with his twin brother Michael, was born on October 18th, 1969 to Michael and Judy Crowley of Middletown, RI. Jaime attended Middletown High School, Boston College, where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in French, and Boston University where he received a degree in Administration. He began his teaching career in North Smithfield in 1996. He then moved to Mt. Hope where he spent the next 14 years as a teacher, Department Chair, and Assistant Principal. In 2011, he became Principal in his hometown of Newport at Thompson Middle School. Jaime embraced the experience of being with his own kids and their friends as he watched them grow. Though he shied away from public recognition, Jaime received many awards including the National Honor Society Teacher of the Year, Assistant Principal of the Year, Milken Educator Award, Principal of the Year and many local teacher awards. Despite all his awards, Jaime would be the first to tell you that the welfare and well-being of his students was the singular focus of his career. He loved being with and taking care of his students.
Jaime enjoyed working alongside family and friends at the family restaurants, Christie’s and La Forge. He was the President of Newport Little League for four years and was well-known as the best announcer in the history of the league. He also served on Boards for the Newport Public Education Foundation and St. Mary’s – where he was also a lector. His greatest joy, however, was simply spending time with his family. Whether watching baseball or basketball games or spending summer nights at Hazard’s Beach, the time with his family was precious.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Melissa; children, Ryan, Gavin, Maeve and Michelle; dogs, Hulk and Patriot; brothers, Michael, Devon, Sean and Brendan; mother, Judy; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St, Newport from 4pm-7pm on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. A Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Newport on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 10am. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.
