The 29th annual @newport.mansions Newport Flower Show returns June 20-22, transforming the historic Gilded Age mansion into a garden lover’s paradise. Presented by the Preservation Society of Newport County, the three-day event will feature a colorful array of floral designs, botanical arts and horticultural specimens set against the elegant backdrop of the famed Bellevue Avenue estate. This year’s theme, “A Floral Fair,” pays tribute to Rosecliff’s original resident, Theresa Fair Oelrichs. Drawing inspiration from her whimsical 1913 fairy tale-themed dinner, the show will blend Gilded Age glamour with the nostalgic charm of a summer county fair. Expect floral installations that evoke prize-winning blooms, carousel horses, teddy bears and even a floral interpretation of a roller coaster. A highlight of the show will be the oceanside garden display on the mansion’s back lawn. Centered around sculptural works by artist David Harber, the installation will take cues from the White City of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Surrounding the gardens, the Flower Show Marketplace will host over 40 vendors and sponsors, offering everything from plants and garden décor to specialty gifts. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are valid for specific morning or afternoon time slots. A limited number of tickets are also available for the Opening Night Party on Friday, June 20, which includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and live music on the lawn. It’s a rare and intimate booking for the country heavyweight—and a full-circle moment for a fanbase that’s watched his genre-defying star rise like a storm. Combs has been riding a high ever since his tender, stripped-down cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” became a runaway hit. The track surged to over 65 million Spotify streams in under two months, eventually peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100—eclipsing Chapman’s original chart run and earning him Single of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards. A Grammy duet with Chapman in early 2024 sealed the song’s place in the cultural canon. The North Carolina native has long cited “Fast Car” as his first musical love, a touchstone from his childhood. That reverence, paired with Combs’s raw authenticity, makes his upcoming Newport set one of the most anticipated performances of the festival. Rest in peace, Melch. Michael “Melch” Melchi Rest in peace, Melch. Michael “Melch” Melchione, 58, of Middletown, RI, passed away on March 31, 2025, in Middletown. Michael was born in South Boston to Al and Judy on August 28, 1966. He went to high school at Middletown High School. Michael was self-employed for twenty years as a master Electrician HVAC Technician and finished his career with Genzyme Pharmaceuticals as their Facility Supervisor. He built his roots within the Aquidneck Island community through his devotion to the Newport and Boston Rugby Football Clubs, and his love for Motocross. Michael is survived by his two children, Michael and Stella Melchione, his father, Regis Smeltz, and his siblings, Regis and Rebecca Smeltz, amongst many beloved friends and extended family. He is preceded in death by his mother, Judith Connolly, and sisters Judith Beck, and Pamela Smeltz. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 10 AM to 12 PM at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St, Newport, followed by a celebration of life at the Hibernian Hall, 2 Wellington Ave, Newport. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Ancient Order of Hibernians, 2 Wellington Ave, Newport, RI 02840. #RIP #newportbuzz #newportri #middletownri
