Cue the slight panic attack and separation anxiety as millions of users confronted life without the app. TikTok is making a comeback after going dark for millions of American users. Following a dramatic nationwide ban, the app is now partially restored thanks to President-elect Trump, who promised to delay the restrictions with an executive order set to take effect Monday. TikTok’s official statement credits Trump for providing “clarity and assurance” to service providers, ensuring the app stays accessible to its 170 million U.S. users and supports over 7 million small businesses relying on the platform. “We stand for the First Amendment and will work with the administration on a long-term solution to keep TikTok in the U.S.,” the company stated. The platform first went offline Sunday morning after Congress passed legislation requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell its stakes by January 19, 2025. Without a deal in place, the Supreme Court upheld the ban, which critics argue undermines free speech. Partial access is now available, with some users reporting limited functionality. Influencers and content creators, however, remain in limbo, unable to upload new content. Scott Sutton, CEO of Later Media, confirmed via X (formerly Twitter), “TikTok is back on desktop, but content and engagement history are still missing.” What’s next for TikTok? It’s official: TikTok is no longer accessible to It’s official: TikTok is no longer accessible to users across America after a controversial law forced the app offline unless it splits from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. When users tried to open the app late Saturday night, they were met with this message: 
“Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now,” it read. “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.” The message then said President-elect Donald Trump has promised to “work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!” This unprecedented shutdown follows a Friday Supreme Court ruling upholding a ban passed by Congress and signed by President Biden last April. The law prohibits TikTok from operating in the U.S. unless ByteDance sells the app to a company based in the U.S. or an allied nation. Adding to the chaos, TikTok disappeared from Apple’s App Store and Google Play late Saturday, along with other ByteDance apps like CapCut, leaving millions of creators and small businesses scrambling. President-elect Donald Trump has hinted at a possible reprieve. Speaking to NBC News on Saturday, Trump said he’s “most likely” to grant TikTok a 90-day extension to delay the ban after he’s inaugurated on Monday. 👉 “The 90-day extension is something we’ll most likely do. It’s appropriate. It’s a very big situation. We’ll announce something soon,” he said. On Jan. 17th, as we celebrate the birth of Benjami On Jan. 17th, as we celebrate the birth of Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s most iconic founding fathers, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on his lesser-known ties to Newport, RI—a city that quietly played a significant role in the fabric of his life and legacy. James Franklin, Benjamin’s older brother, was a pioneer in colonial printing and journalism. In 1727, James established the Rhode Island Gazette here in Newport, the first newspaper in the colony. Its creation marked a milestone in expanding access to news and ideas in early Rhode Island. While Ben Franklin’s documented visits to Newport were relatively limited, their importance cannot be overstated. As a burgeoning hub of commerce and innovation, Newport was a natural stop for Franklin, particularly in his roles as postmaster general and diplomat. Its strategic location and status as a thriving seaport made Newport an essential link in the colonial postal system—a system Franklin famously overhauled to enhance communication and efficiency throughout the colonies. The Franklin family’s influence left a lasting imprint on Newport. James Franklin’s contributions to the city’s publishing landscape laid the groundwork for Newport’s intellectual and cultural development. Meanwhile, Benjamin’s legacy of innovation and civic improvement continues to resonate, aligning with Newport’s rich history of resilience and reinvention. Today, traces of Franklin’s spirit can be felt in Newport’s historical landmarks and institutions, which celebrate the values he championed: curiosity, innovation, and community. Not to mention, both his brother, James, and his sister-and-law, Ann, are buried in Newport. As we honor Franklin’s birthday, it’s fitting to also recognize Newport’s enduring connection to one of the nation’s most brilliant minds—a connection forged through shared ideals and a commitment to progress. So, on this Jan. 17th, raise a glass to Benjamin Franklin: inventor, diplomat, writer, and occasional visitor to Newport.
