The Newport County Branch of the NAACP celebrated The Newport County Branch of the NAACP celebrated their 40th Annual National Holiday Celebration in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 20 with several events including a lunch at Green Valley Country Club. Newport City Councilor Ellen Pinnock served as the luncheon’s mistress of ceremonies. Councilor Pinnock said she was still reflecting on the poem delivered by Dylan Wiley that morning at the Annual Breakfast Program at Thompson Middle School and invited him to share The Time is Now with the crowd. Cantor Fred Scheff from Temple Shalom gave the Invocation encouraging attendees to continue to build on their actions no matter how narrow the bridge they travel may become. Newport NAACP President Jimmy Winters echoed the sentiment when he called for event goers to strive to obtain liberty, equality, and justice for all while working in harmony. For 24 years the Ermino P. Lisbon Scholarship has been presented. Barbara Lisbon was clearly proud to share that Jelani Jackson was this year’s recipient. Kayla Oliveira, a freshman at St. Anslem College, was presented with a scholarship from the NAACP. Guest speaker Jonathan Lewis shared how Dr. King was only 13 years into his leadership role when he was assassinated. He pointed out that action did not stop Dr. King’s wife, Coretta Scott King, from continuing to prioritize her community which drew a loud round of applause. “Dr. King didn’t care who was in office, he endorsed values and goals” said Lewis who also emphasized how Dr. King challenge people to suspend their judgement. “Change comes in the daily organizing we do” stressed Mr. Lewis. He invited everyone to partake in the Season of Nonviolence which runs from Jan. 30-Apr. 4. Ways people can do that? Be an example for one other, commit to help one another, have courage to do more, build bridges between groups, and be ready for the losses that come along with those actions. “Wear values on your sleeves not your emotions. Suspend your first judgements and get to know one another. If you aren’t going to do it, don’t criticize and if you can’t get there help someone else get there” concluded Mr. Lewis. #newportri #newportbuzz #naacp #mlk

Bottega Bocconi and Le Bec Sucre put the bedroom c Bottega Bocconi and Le Bec Sucre put the bedroom community of Middletown on food seekers’ radar in recent years, but other than a smattering of restaurants clustered by First Beach, and a bunch of fast food options, a dining scene has never been emblematic of our neighbor to the north. Since @pastavinori opened in the Polo Plaza in August, it seems clear that the area was starved for a new restaurant. Service on both nights I visited was outstanding. The small room’s walls are adorned with black and white photos of old-time celebrities slurping spaghetti. The Rat Pack has a place of honor at the bar and on the TV that runs old performances by the crooners. The menu offers a rendition of every dish from every Italian mob movie ever made, each totally slayed. All pasta is house made. And though I tried it all, I’m here to talk to you about the lefthand side of this menu, a list of Italian American standards cooked to al dente perfection. Bottles of EVOO accompany hunks of herby, chewy focaccia. A Mediterranean style salad, in its crunchy simplicity, is a shining example of the genre. Maccheroni Amatriciana, made with crispy strips of Guanciale (pork cheek) in a spicy tomato sauce with cherry tomatoes and pecorino served over toothsome, ribbed pasta tubes is hearty and balanced. Similarly, Tonarelli Carbonara, made properly with egg yolks, Pecorino and pepper (no cream!), boasts extra crisp bits of the same pork jowl, mixed in with the thick spaghetti and as a salty-crispy garnish that balances its richness. A lightly chewy exterior gives way to the creamiest, fluffiest ricotta, parmigiano, and pecorino cheese filling ever in the Ravioli di Formaggio. The puffy, quilted squares are blanketed in a velvety brown butter sauce flecked with black truffles. Sublime. Congrats to Middletown on a real Goomba for the neighborhood. Today, we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Ma Today, we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and nonviolence reshaped America. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. King emerged as a guiding force in the civil rights movement, advocating for change through peaceful resistance. From the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the Birmingham campaign, his leadership inspired millions to stand against racial injustice. In 1963, during the March on Washington, he delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, envisioning a nation where people are judged by their character, not the color of their skin. Dr. King’s impact went beyond words. His efforts were instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, dismantling segregation and securing equal voting rights. Despite relentless threats and violence, he remained steadfast in his belief that nonviolence was the most powerful tool for change. His advocacy extended to economic justice and global peace, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all struggles for equality. Tragically, Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, but his dream lives on. Dr. King once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” As we reflect on his words, let us honor his memory by committing ourselves to building a better, more inclusive society. His dream of a world where individuals are judged by their character, not the color of their skin, continues to light the way forward. Today, let’s not just remember Dr. King’s legacy—let’s live it. Aquidneck Island locals gathered at St. George’s Aquidneck Island locals gathered at St. George’s Ice Rink on Jan. 19 to attend the 4th Annual Guns ‘N Hoses charity hockey tournament. Members of Aquidneck Island police departments faced off against firefighters in a spirited match. Proceeds from the game benefited 3-year-old Rémi Vassallo and his family. Rémi, born with a complex congenital heart defect, has undergone multiple surgeries and requires a tracheostomy tube and ventilator to assist with his breathing. Despite the many cheers for Liam Leys, the Aquidneck Island Police team secured their fourth victory in the annual charity match, winning 7-6. The event was spearheaded by Elysha and Dave Guerriero, with Sgt. Guerriero coaching the Newport Whalers. Elysha remarked that each year they strive to make the event bigger and better for the community. Children enjoyed the “Chuck a Duck” competition during intermission, where dozens of kids lined up to throw their rubber ducks onto the ice. Colten Costa emerged as the winner, with his duck traveling the farthest. In addition to supporting the Vassallo family, a portion of the funds raised will be donated to NAMI RI through NoSolo. NAMI RI promotes mental health awareness for first responders.
