To the Editor: Elections have real consequences—consequences that affect real people. As we approach this election, it’s time to seriously examine the impact of Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong’s decisions on our community. I want to recognize someone who’s given so much to Newport without ever seeking the spotlight: Barry Botelho. Barry has supported this town in ways Xay could learn from. For years, he provided first jobs to local kids at Easton’s Beach Snack Bar, teaching them responsibility, hard work, and community pride. When the pandemic hit and Newport’s restaurant scene was on the ropes, Barry was one of the first to step up. He became my first client in a food delivery service I launched to support local businesses. Barry didn’t just sign up—he taught me the ropes of the restaurant business and put in countless volunteer hours to help create an online ordering system that supported over 40 Newport restaurants. He’s been the quiet hero working behind the scenes to make Newport stronger. And where was Xay? Instead of celebrating Barry’s contributions, the mayor’s actions pushed him out of Easton’s Beach, where generations of Newporters have enjoyed Barry’s famous lobster rolls. Now, Xay is calling Easton’s Beach “not essential” and pushing a 99-year public-private partnership that would privatize one of Newport’s most cherished public spaces. Newport deserves better. Think about former mayors: Sardella, Winthrop, Gaines, Donnelly, Gordon, McKenna...Would they have targeted a dedicated local businessman and community servant? Absolutely not. Mayor Khamsyvoravong’s vision for Newport seems to cater more to outsiders and investors than to the residents who live and work here. This is a “leader” who wasn’t even registered to vote in Newport until 2021. As we approach Election Day, let’s remember that our choices today will shape Newport’s future. This election is about what kind of town we want Newport to be. It’s about deciding whether we want leaders who protect our public spaces, honor community traditions, and support the people who make Newport great. Elections have consequences. Vote accordingly. Enter Lower Broadway! Funky and laid-back, this stretch of town is dotted with unique thrift shops, a tattoo parlor, and a mix of bars and eateries that welcome you in with that distinct Newport edge. If your food and drink stops have mostly been on the wharves, now’s the time to check out this neighborhood gem. Smack in the middle of it all? @tavernonbroadway. At first, it might feel like one of those places where everyone knows each other and you’re the new face in town. But here’s the trick: hang around, take in the friendly banter, and you’ll feel like part of the crew soon enough. Tavern GM John Keating, with his charming Irish brogue and a bit of gruff wit, doesn’t take long to win over newcomers. He’s got a self-deprecating sense of humor and strict standards—this is a safe, no-nonsense spot for everyone, especially women. “This is a safe space,” he says. “No B.S.” Regulars are a mix of after-work happy hour groups, sports fans, and Newport locals who come in to unwind, catch a game, or grab some solid pub food. Take it from attorney Pat Coyne, a loyal regular, who loves the camaraderie and calls it his favorite spot for wings, sports, and solid pub eats. (He swears by the Old Bay dry rub wings, especially if you order them with a light dusting and well-done for extra flavor.) And the chili? That’s from an award-winning Newport Fire Department recipe, a crowd-pleaser that’s worth a try. When you’re here, it’s all about good drinks, laughs, and a laid-back vibe that makes you feel right at home. So order up a house-made Bloody Mary, soak in the local flavor, and give it a few visits. You’ll be on a first-name basis with everyone before you know it—and like Keating says, “Every customer is a potential regular.” But now that I’ve spilled his secret, looks like I’ll need to work a bit harder to claim my own spot! Tuesday, October 29 turned into a nerve-wracking d Tuesday, October 29 turned into a nerve-wracking day for two Newport Police officers, who found themselves in the crosshairs of a highway collision while transporting the department’s brand-new, specially armored van. The officers were en route from the manufacturer’s facility in St. Augustine, Florida, back home to Newport when near disaster struck in North Carolina. A massive tractor trailer sideswiped the Special Response Vehicle — purpose-built for active threats and emergencies — leaving it battered and bruised. Remarkably, both officers walked away from the crash, though the same can’t be said for the vehicle, designed by International Armored Group to withstand the toughest conditions. A local Dunn, NC, police officer happened to be behind the tractor trailer and caught the whole ordeal on dashcam. “The vehicle performed as designed and likely saved lives, though sooner than anyone expected,” the Newport Police Department said in a statement. A South Kingstown motorcyclist has died following A South Kingstown motorcyclist has died following a high-speed crash on the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge Thursday afternoon, Rhode Island State Police confirmed. The fatal incident occurred just before 3:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of the bridge, where 34-year-old Jonathan W. Hopkins reportedly rear-ended a van while weaving in and out of traffic at a high speed. State Police say Hopkins was navigating the bridge’s traffic when he collided with the rear of a Ford Transit van, sending him and his motorcycle crashing onto the pavement. Troopers arrived on the scene quickly and Hopkins was rushed to Newport Hospital. Tragically, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, authorities said. The Ford Transit’s driver, a 51-year-old New Bedford man, and his passenger, 48, escaped the crash without injuries, police reported. No charges are expected to be filed against the van’s occupants. The accident caused eastbound traffic to be temporarily shut down as emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene. All lanes were reopened around 5 p.m. following a 30-minute closure. State Police are continuing to investigate but stress that no further charges are pending. To the Editor: I’ve known Jeanne-Marie Napolita To the Editor: I’ve known Jeanne-Marie Napolitano for many years, even before her run for City Council. As a First Ward Councilor, she worked tirelessly to upgrade housing in the North End. After losing her bid for an at-large seat, she continued to collaborate with New Visions, the Housing Authority, and state and federal officials to ensure her initial efforts were not forgotten. Jeanne-Marie returned to the Council in 2000, serving at-large. She worked with her longtime partners to realize the redevelopment now known as Newport Heights. Jeanne-Marie’s energy and commitment to Newport’s citizens have been unparalleled. As Mayor, she led the transformation of Broadway from a neglected thoroughfare into a vibrant entrance to the city.
