Each year on February 22, the Rhode Island Society Each year on February 22, the Rhode Island Society Sons of the Revolution gathers at the Redwood Library & Athenaeum to commemorate the birthday of George Washington with a formal tribute at the Houdon statue of the nation’s first president. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, February 22, at 11:30 AM at the Redwood Library. The ceremony, held on the library’s south porch, features military honors, historical readings, and a musket salute. The event is a longstanding tradition, blending reverence and pageantry. The Rhode Island Society Sons of the Revolution, joined by the Artillery Company of Newport, presents a color guard in honor of Washington. The statue, a replica of the famed marble sculpture by French artist Jean-Antoine Houdon that resides in the Virginia Capitol, serves as the focal point for the ceremony. The Washington Salute, a popular annual tradition at the Redwood, will once again be staged by the Rhode Island Society Sons of the Revolution. The 293rd birthday tribute to George Washington will feature a history of Washington’s life, a reading of his Prayer For The Nation, a wreath laying, and conclude with a musket salute by the Artillery Company of Newport. Col. Roy D. Lauth, Sr., President of the Rhode Island Society Sons of the Revolution, and Dr. Benedict Leca, Executive Director of the Redwood Library & Athenaeum, will offer remarks, reflecting on Washington’s enduring legacy. A reading of Washington’s Prayer for the Nation will follow, underscoring the first president’s vision for unity and prosperity. The tribute concludes with a solemn wreath laying and a musket salute performed by the Artillery Company of Newport under the command of Col. Robert Beebe. The Redwood Library & Athenaeum, founded in 1747, is the oldest lending library in America and one of the oldest libraries in continuous use in the country.
