Ray Botelho has been diagnosed with end-stage kidn Ray Botelho has been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease due to a viral infection caused by undetected Lyme disease. His only chance at survival is a kidney transplant. A lifelong advocate for health and fitness, @raywatch73 has dedicated his life to helping others as a coach, personal trainer, professional triathlete, and lifeguard. Now, he needs help from our community. Ray’s kidneys are failing, and without a donor, his future is uncertain. He is currently on the transplant list at Massachusetts General Hospital, but the wait time is approximately five years—time he may not have. A living donor could save his life. Because his blood type is AB, he can receive a kidney from any blood type, increasing the chances of finding a match. Beyond the search for a donor, Ray is facing overwhelming medical and living expenses. He will need months of recovery after the transplant, during which he won’t be able to work. Donations will help cover medical costs, post-op care, day-to-day living expenses, and—if a generous living donor is found—expenses related to their donation. Once upon a time on this island, you couldn’t fi Once upon a time on this island, you couldn’t find yourself a stacked ham and swiss on rye, a roast beef with russian and cheddar, or a proper tuna melt to save your life. Those days are gone. You want a nice sammich? Newport’s got ‘em. @theprotectiveclub, a popular Fifth Ward hangout for members and guests, has developed a reputation for overstuffed subs/grinders, starting with an Italian piled high with cured meats, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, along with other combos including a Reuben, pastrami options, and more. When Tiffany and Conor Melville opened @newportsandwichco, they sold out a week’s worth of sandwiches in one day. They’re known for a thinly sliced roast beef au jus dipped in a mouthwateringly savory, beefy broth, served on a toasted onion roll with toppings as maximal or minimal as you like. @bottegabocconi’s famous piadine, an Italian sandwich common to the Romagna region of Italy, are built on soft, unleavened flatbread. Fillings can include any of the imported meats and cheeses flown in daily from Italy and super fresh or marinated veggies. Check out the hearty beef and pork meatball panini at @thequenchernewport, served on toasted focaccia with pomodoro sauce, melty mozzarella, bright, shaved basil and chili flake. @nikolaspizza just unveiled their newly renovated dining room and though the place is known for pizza, pub favorites and Italian entrees, rumor has it that its breaded, seasoned, fried Filet-O-Chicken sandwich, served on a toasted brioche bun, is the best chicken sandwich on Aquidneck Island. @scratchnewport just took home first place in Newport’s Chili Cookoff, but if you know, you know that the place is famed for its assortment of gourmet grilled cheese sammies that really take the category to another level (duck confit with peach habanero marmalade and melted Gruyere, anyone?).
