Newport restaurateurs Richard Sardella and Patrick Newport restaurateurs Richard Sardella and Patrick Fitzgerald have reason to celebrate after their “Cuisine For A Cause” fundraising drive exceeded expectations, raising over $12,000 for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center of Newport. The drive, held over the MLK holiday weekend, was spearheaded by @sardellas Italian Restaurant and its sister eatery, @imbriglios_napoletana Pizzeria. The restaurants pledged to donate 20% of gross sales with a goal of $10,000 to support the Center’s critical hunger relief programs. Thanks to an outpouring of community support, the final donation totaled $12,565. “It was wonderful seeing so many friends of the Center enjoying meals at Sardella’s and Imbriglio’s over MLK weekend,” said Heather Hole Strout, executive director of the @newportmlk. “This generous donation comes at a perfect time when our clients need us more than ever. We help thousands of Newport County residents year-round, and this contribution makes a real impact.” Sardella’s, a Newport mainstay set to celebrate its 45th anniversary in 2025, and Imbriglio’s, known for its Neapolitan-style pizza, drew enthusiastic crowds throughout the weekend. @salveregina announced Thursday a $5 million gift @salveregina announced Thursday a $5 million gift from Trustee Barbara A. Papitto to fund the construction of a new student center pavilion on its oceanfront campus. The Papitto Pavilion will provide a versatile space for student life, programming, and events. The 5,400-square-foot structure will be located between Gerety Hall and McKillop Library on Ochre Point Avenue. Designed by DBVW Architects of Providence, the pavilion will preserve the surrounding Barbara Mallardi Rose Garden and complement Newport’s historic architecture. Construction is set to begin in summer 2025, with completion expected by fall 2026. The pavilion will seat up to 300 people in a lecture-style setup and include a catering kitchen, making it ideal for student organizations, retreats, and career-connected programming. “Barbara Papitto is recognized across our state for her incredible generosity and devotion to reducing barriers for people through education,” said Salve Regina President Kelli J. Armstrong. “The Papitto Pavilion will empower our students to chart their educational journey with purpose and provide a beautiful space for student organizations to hold events and build community. We are eternally grateful to Barbara and all she does for our university.” Papitto expressed her pride in supporting Salve Regina’s mission. “Salve has built innovative programs that bring rigorous academics together with a focus on purpose and service. Concerned residents are questioning potentially ha Concerned residents are questioning potentially hazardous dumping activities near Easton’s Pond, Newport’s primary drinking water source. Led by John Walker—an underground utilities contractor and former Newport City Council candidate—the group alleges that raw materials are being dumped on the property without explanation or oversight. Walker and neighbors report seeing heavy equipment bulldozing materials into the pond’s former sedimentation area, a move they believe endangers the environment and lacks permits or studies. “This isn’t just about what’s being dumped—it’s about the safety of our community and the integrity of our water supply,” Walker said. City officials attribute the activity to a surge in water main breaks. A city spokesperson claims the materials are tied to emergency repairs, but testing hasn’t been conducted to ensure safety. “We want transparency,” Walker said. “Where is this material coming from? What’s in it? These are basic, reasonable questions.” Walker alleges no documentation or testing has been provided for backfilling activities at the former sedimentation pond, which supports diverse wildlife. “The material isn’t being reused—it’s being buried. And we have no idea what it is,” he said. Walker warns of potential damage to the area’s fragile ecosystem. Walker’s efforts have led the city to secure an alternate site for storing excavated materials. Last weekend, Mayor Charlie Holder, Councilors Jeanne Marie Napolitano and Lynn Ceglie, and Utilities Director Rob Schultz visited the site with Walker to review his concerns. The group is urging an immediate halt to all dumping at Easton’s Pond until the city can demonstrate lawful practices and environmental safety. They also demand public identification of involved contractors and documentation of associated contracts.
