Hibernian Hall was hopping on March 1 as community Hibernian Hall was hopping on March 1 as community members rolled in for the annual Green Eggs and Ham breakfast, a fundraiser for Newport’s 70th St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In the morning, plates were piled high with eggs as parishioners gathered after church. Some lingered into the afternoon to hear The Moonlight Ramblers, while others streamed in swapping blizzard tales — with a special thanks to essential workers like Karen Downes. This year’s grand marshals, Mike and Tish (Curtis) Behan, sparkled as they accepted congratulations from one and all, including former grand marshals Harp Donnelly and brother Chris Behan. Behan, you am? Behan, they are. Selected to lead the 70th edition of the parade, the honor feels especially fitting. The Behans have long been dedicated to the community, supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, the MLK Center, St. Clare, St. Philomena’s, and the Newport Whalers. Their own love story even began on Parade Day in 1981 at the Treadway Inn (IYKYK). The music played, the dancing started — and the rest, as they say, is history. They were married in 1983 at St. Joseph’s Church and are proud parents of three: Mike (IV), Mary, and Garrett. Mike the Fourth and Garrett now run Behan Bros., the company their father founded as Behan and Booth in 1973. Mike and Tish hope Mary will someday join the fold. The pair also take pride in tracing their Irish roots. Burns, Kellys, Sullivans, Sheas, Donnellys, and Donohoes fill out the family tree, with branches stretching back to Counties Kerry and Cork. And, of course, there are the floats — a Behan and Booth tradition for more than 30 years. Themed, spirited, and loaded with smiling children no matter the weather, they’ve become parade favorites. These days, the Behan Bros. team leads construction, and we can’t wait to see what they unveil this year. Newport’s 70th St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off March 14 at 11 a.m. from City Hall — rain, snow, or shine — led by the Behans and filled with smiles. 🍀 #newportstpats #newportbuzz #newportri
The Department of Homeland Security has announced The Department of Homeland Security has announced that 56 members of the U.S. Coast Guard who were discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine will be reinstated with back pay, following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. The decision stems from Executive Order 14184, signed Jan. 27, 2025, which made reinstatement available to service members separated over the military’s vaccine mandate. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem called the move “a victory for religious, personal, and medical freedom for all Americans — both in and out of uniform.” She criticized the previous administration’s vaccine policy, saying it unfairly impacted service members. The vaccine requirement traces back to Aug. 21, 2021, when then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin directed all military personnel to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The Coast Guard adopted a similar mandate. Both policies were rescinded in January 2023. Under Trump’s executive order, a three-member panel of the Coast Guard’s Board for Correction of Military Records reviewed the cases and voted, upon Noem’s recommendation, to reinstate the 56 members discharged for refusing the vaccine. The reinstatement will be retroactive to each member’s date of discharge, ensuring their records reflect continuous active-duty service without interruption. According to DHS, those returning may be eligible for back pay and allowances, as well as potential restoration of bonuses, rank and seniority, depending on individual determinations by the Coast Guard. The announcement marks the latest step in the administration’s effort to reverse pandemic-era military policies that led to the separation of service members who declined vaccination. #coastguard #newportbuzz #palmbeachbuzz
The Rhode Island DEM has preserved 70 acres of coa The Rhode Island DEM has preserved 70 acres of coastal habitat at Gull Cove in Portsmouth, using $880,000 from the Bouchard B-120 oil spill settlement to secure the property. The newly conserved land includes salt marsh and coastal uplands along the northwestern shoreline of Gull Cove, an intertidal estuary next to the Sakonnet River. With the acquisition, DEM now oversees the entire north shore of the cove, including a 16.75-acre parcel recently transferred from the Rhode Island DOT. Officials say protecting the shoreline will safeguard wetlands and create a buffer that allows marshes to migrate inland as sea levels rise. The area provides foraging, roosting and breeding grounds for salt-marsh dependent birds and supports recreational activities such as shellfishing, paddling and birdwatching. “Gull Cove is a true state treasure; a thriving coastal ecosystem that provides critical bird habitat while offering opportunities for shellfishing, paddling, and birdwatching,” DEM Director Terry Gray said in a statement. He called the purchase a significant conservation milestone and said using Bouchard B-120 settlement funds ensures a lasting benefit for Rhode Island residents. The funding stems from a 2003 spill in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, when the Bouchard B-120 oil tank barge released nearly 98,000 gallons of fuel oil. The spill affected roughly 100 miles of shoreline in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, damaging wildlife, shellfish beds and coastal habitat. State and federal natural resource agencies secured a settlement to restore wildlife and compensate for lost recreational uses. DEM worked alongside the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on the Natural Resource Trustee Council to administer the funds. DEM officials say the acquisition will help jumpstart marsh restoration efforts in the cove. Design work is already underway, supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The property will be managed by DEM’s Division of Fish & Wildlife for habitat conservation and public access. #portsmouthri #newportbuzz
