Welcome to my annual mid-winter lecture to island- Welcome to my annual mid-winter lecture to island-bound food fans. Yep, early March is mid-winter here; talk to ya in late May for a new season. Whether you’re jetting off for a pre-spring beach vaca or feeling a tad skeptical of the friendly skies, a change of scenery, fresh air, and a menu you can’t recite by heart are just a half-hour-ish away from Aquidneck Island. Point your car toward a bridge, foodsters! Culinary gems await on the other side. If you love farm-to-table, a trip to Wakefield’s charming @purslane.ri is a must. In East Greenwich, the decadent egg yolk-filled ravioli with shaved truffles at @lamasseriari is beyond words. @babasushibristol in Bristol dazzles with its fresh, glistening sushi platters. For Newporters seeking a quick escape, @plumptbistro is hard to beat. Two quick bridges and you’re there. Jamestown residents Ralph and Elisa Conte opened the restaurant in 2012 with a menu of Italian staples and internationally inspired dishes, all done right. Prices are reasonable, portions generous, staff welcoming, cocktails flow, and the dining room is buzzing with regulars. The burrata with prosciutto, served with grilled toasts, oozes creaminess, while the prosciutto is tender, lightly smoky, and draped over fresh, undressed arugula. A subtly spicy, plump coconut curry mussel bowl simmered with tomato, lemongrass, cilantro, and lime is a must-try. Order extra bread to soak up the elixir or opt for fries. Also divine: heartbreakingly tender grilled octopus served with celery leaves, creamy white bean mash, citrus, and salty olive tapenade. But the Plum Point pasta dish that ranks as one of my top five in Rhode Island is the Strozzapreti with slow braised pork Genovese style. The house made pasta twists are a chewy masterpiece and the most excellent foil for this explosively savory ragu with its tender shreds of delicate but rich pork, bits of carrot, rosemary, and a vague scent of orange. Law enforcement agencies across Aquidneck Island a Law enforcement agencies across Aquidneck Island and Rhode Island are ramping up efforts to combat drunk driving as the Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes over downtown on Saturday, March 15, 2025. Officers from Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth, Jamestown, Tiverton, and the Rhode Island State Police will launch a joint DUI enforcement campaign, targeting impaired drivers before they pose a risk to others on the road. The annual parade, a beloved tradition celebrating Newport’s Irish heritage, draws thousands of revelers. But officials say the festivities too often lead to dangerous decisions, with some attendees choosing to drive after drinking. “Each year, we see preventable tragedies caused by impaired driving,” authorities said in a joint statement. “We’re urging paradegoers to plan ahead—use a rideshare, designate a sober driver, or take public transportation.” Police officers and state troopers will be stationed along key routes in and out of the city, watching for signs of impairment. The Providence Police BAT (Blood Alcohol Testing) Mobile will also be deployed to expedite processing for those arrested. The crackdown is backed by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s Office on Highway Safety and the Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association.
