You’ve got to eat, and now seems like a great ti You’ve got to eat, and now seems like a great time to support small, locally-owned businesses and dive into any comfort we can find. Newport’s Broadway neighborhood offers culinary options that range from classic New England pub fare to big-menu breakfast classics to authentic Jamaican jerk chicken and apple pie ice cream. And that’s just the lower half of the street. Before you shiver at the thought of ice cream in November, consider your Thanksgiving dessert table. Newporters are being invited to once again take a Newporters are being invited to once again take a climb to the top as the Miantonomi Park tower once again opens to the public on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in observance of Veterans Day. This event, which is being organized by the City, Miantonomi Park Commission, and the Aquidneck Land Trust, aims to recognize the historical significance of the tower as a memorial to the Veterans of World War I. Completed in 1929, the 100-foot stone tower was designed by William Kendall of the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White.The Park and Tower were set aside as a memorial to service members from Newport who died in World War I. The Park is also on the National Register of Historic Places due to its history as a seat of power of the Narragansett Indians and its use as a lookout and military stronghold by Revolutionary War forces, both British and Colonial. Adults and families are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. The interior stone steps, lead to a narrow metal staircase that ascends to the top observation deck. Kenneth George Boyer, of Stonington, born November Kenneth George Boyer, of Stonington, born November 17, 1964, passed away on October 17. He was predeceased by his parents, George K. Boyer and Priscilla (Fryer) Boyer. Ken is survived by his three sisters, Sandra Boyer (Daniel), Kim Mortensen (Bill), and Kathryn Keller (Attila) and their daughter, Reka. Close to Ken’s heart were his two nephews, Christopher Myers (Jasmine) and Eric Myers (Whittney), who he always felt were the brothers he never had.  He treasured his great-nieces and great-nephew making sure to keep every note and drawing the kids made for him over the years.  In addition to his family, Ken leaves behind many dear friends with whom he shared countless cherished memories. Ken was a man who worked hard and lived life with vigor. When not focused on work, he embodied a playful joy and love for new experiences, and there was no place he’d rather be than surrounded by family and friends—sharing a meal, mooring his beloved boat at the perfect spot, and welcoming aboard any who shared his spirit for a good time. Ken enjoyed the journey, but it was the destination that mattered most—gathering with friends, connecting with new people, sharing laughter, and turning evenings into something that would live on in infamy. His generous heart was always willing to lend a hand to those in need, showing his kindness and loyalty time and again. Ken was a man of true character, whose generosity and love for life left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice in Ken’s honor.  Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 23rd, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Mystic Funeral Home on Route 1 in Mystic. “You don’t have a right to the cards you believe you should have been dealt. In a sweeping victory for Newport, Councilor Charl In a sweeping victory for Newport, Councilor Charlie Holder clinched a decisive win on Tuesday night, positioning himself as the city’s next mayor. Holder, who ran a no-nonsense, solutions-focused campaign, steered clear of the mudslinging from outgoing Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong’s ally, Ryan Patrick Kelley—the head of the controversial “Change the Charter” group, widely criticized as a one-man operation aimed at helping Xay retain the mayor’s seat at any cost. In a show of humility, Mayor Khamsyvoravong made a brief appearance at Holder’s victory party to offer congratulations to the incoming leader. However, Newport’s political fireworks may not be over yet. Newly elected Councilor Steph Smyth, who recently contributed to a failed smear campaign against council veterans Jeanne Marie Napolitano and Lynn Ceglie (both of whom won reelection), now faces the uncomfortable task of working alongside them. Xay, who raised 1,250% more than any other candidate—66% from out-of-town sources and $40,000 from lawyers, lobbyists, and developers—will remain on the council as a certain backbencher. Meanwhile, Councilor David Carlin coasted to another term in Ward 3, going unchallenged. In the Ward 1 showdown, Ellen Pinnock narrowly edged out Hugo DeAscentis by a slim margin of 46 votes. John Walker, a 40-year-old Newport native and cand John Walker, a 40-year-old Newport native and candidate for Newport City Council At-Large, is running with the endorsements of three highly respected community leaders: former mayors Harry Winthrop and Richard Sardella, as well as former City Councilor Kate Leonard. Walker, whose family has called Newport home for generations, has lived here his entire life and is a proud graduate of Sheffield Elementary, Thompson Middle School, Rogers High School, and the Newport Area Career and Tech Center. Walker, a father of five with children attending Newport’s public schools, is both a small business owner and a commercial fisherman. He owns a welding and fabrication construction company in Newport, and his fishing vessel is one of the last Newport resident-owned boats still working out of Newport Harbor—a symbol of his commitment to Newport’s enduring traditions and industries. His campaign is built on the principles of transparency, accountability, and responsiveness. “I pledge to make the quality of life for our community my top priority in every decision I make on the council floor,” Walker said, adding that he is committed to cultivating a doctrine of transparency and accountability for both himself and his colleagues in elected office.
