The City of Newport’s Forestry Division annual tree planting program is underway and great trees are available to City residents. The Division will be providing several varieties of trees at wholesale cost and they will plant the tree for any resident. Residents in neighborhoods that lack significant tree cover can improve home values and quality of life by participating in the city tree planting program.
The trees have arrived and are here waiting for new homes. They range in size from 8 -12 feet tall. Trees can be planted on public property or setback up to 20 feet onto private property. The City of Newport will provide and plant the trees at the wholesale cost of $70 for a bare root tree. Drip irrigation bags, subsidized by the Tree Society, are available for an additional $10. The retail cost to buy a similar tree could be as high as $250, and the cost to have a tree installed and guaranteed by a contractor could be as high as $500.
Twelve varieties of various size and shape tree will be available. They include flowering trees such as Autumn Flowering Cherry, Purple Prince Crabapple and Pink Flair Flowering Cherry. Shade trees available include Maples, Oaks, Lindens, Planetrees and Kentucky Coffee trees.
