The Hummel Report Investigates: Can the Providence-to-Newport ferry survive without taxpayer money?

The Providence-to-Newport ferry has been a huge success since it was launched on July 1st – with 12,000 tickets sold in the first three weeks. But the service relies on a $500,000 federal grant to heavily subsidize ticket prices. This week The Hummel Report takes a ride and ask the Department of Transportation: is there is any scenario where it wouldn’t have to rely on taxpayer money to make it work?

The Hummel Report is a non-profit organization with an IRS approved 501(c)3 status. The mission of the Hummel Report is to expose waste and corruption in government to the people of Rhode Island and become the go-to source for news outlets of any medium across the state. And through the Rhode Island Spotlight, we strive to highlight and celebrate community heroes, both individuals and organizations that are making a significant, positive difference for fellow Rhode Islanders.
