The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is reminding motorists that the final step in a series of traffic pattern changes on I-95 South near Exits 22 (Routes 6/10; Downtown) and Exit 21 (Atwells Avenue) in Providence is scheduled to be in place Thursday, November 17.
This change will restore the traffic pattern on this part of I-95, but with all traffic utilizing the new Providence Viaduct. RIDOT will remove the lane split that has been in place for the last few weeks as the Department shifted traffic onto the new structure one lane at a time.
Overnight lane closures will be scheduled for I-95 South starting at Exit 23 (Charles Street) tomorrow night beginning at 9 p.m. with all lanes reopened and the new traffic pattern in effect by 6 a.m. Thursday, November 17. Weekday overnight lane closures continue through the end of year as RIDOT finalizes construction of the bridge.

The Providence Viaduct is an eight-lane highway consisting of two bridge structures that carry I-95 through the capital city. The Viaduct currently carries 220,000 daily vehicle crossings – making it one of the most heavily traveled stretches of interstate on the East Coast. In addition, it is a key access point for several downtown businesses and attractions.
