U.S Senate confirms Raimondo as Commerce Secretary

The United States Senate confirmed Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo Tuesday afternoon as President Biden’s Commerce Secretary by a vote of 84-15.

Lt. Governor Dan McKee will take over as Governor of Rhode Island once Raimondo resigns her seat this afternoon. McKee will be Rhode Island’s 76th governor.

Senator Ted Cruz had put a hold on Raimondo’s nomination, requiring a cloture vote on Monday to end debate.

Cruz spoke from the Senate floor earlier Tuesday urging his colleagues to join him in voting against Raimondo’s nomination over her comments on Huawei.
