Dear Friends and fellow Newporters,
Six years ago we embarked on a mission together to better the lives of our citizens and transform Newport into a year round economic engine. I am proud to say that we’ve accomplished much these last six years:
-Millions in new investment into our public schools.
-Property tax relief for working families.
-Award winning City budgets and a near perfect AA+ credit rating upgrade.
-Pell Bridge ramp realignment funding is secured and scheduled to begin in 2019.
-Cranston-Calvert redevelopment designed to expand market rate apartment rental opportunities that will attract Millennial professionals to live, work, and play in our great City.
-Island Moving Company’s (IMC) purchase of the old Triplett School campus will bring performing dance to Broadway and add to its revitalization.
-Infrastructure upgrades including roads, parks, seawalls, water and sewer, across every corner of Newport. And the work continues!
We’ve successfully formed a Public-Private-Partnership and a Newport Project Development Corporation to spearhead the bridge realignment and development of the Newport Innovation Hub. Newport’s new 21st century economy will be more than tourism. It will include real growth and real innovation in the private sector as well. The Entanglement Research Institute (eRI) currently in negotiation promises to bring quantum computing to Newport and with it over 100 jobs within the first few years! The old Sheffield School will open in a few short months as “Innovate Newport” and provide over 34,000 square feet of space for entrepreneurs, innovators, and small businesses to capitalize on growth in defense, maritime technologies, and cybersecurity.
In addition to serving as your Councilor-at-Large, I also serve on the Discover Newport and Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) boards of directors, and I am Board Chair of the Newport Prevention Coalition. I previously served on the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) sub-committee and the Newport-Middletown Regionalization Joint Committee. I am committed to a new high school for our children and will work towards improved regionalization and securing funding for construction while managing costs on behalf of our taxpayers.
These are exciting times for Newport. Properly managed growth and investment in these next two years will secure Newport’s prosperity for generations to come. I ask for your vote this November 6th. Thank you.
