Bryan Hodgson introduced as Providence College men’s basketball head coach in 2026

Providence College Hires Bryan Hodgson as Men’s Basketball Coach

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence College has named Bryan Hodgson as its 17th men’s basketball head coach, school officials announced Sunday, ushering in a new era for the Friars program.

Hodgson arrives after one season at the University of South Florida, where he led the Bulls to a 25-9 record, an American Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championship, and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012. He was named the conference’s Coach of the Year.

“Bryan brings a strong track record of leadership and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court,” Providence College President Fr. Kenneth R. Sicard said. “I am confident that the future is bright for Friar men’s basketball.”

In three seasons as a head coach, Hodgson has compiled a 70-37 record. Before his success at South Florida, he spent two seasons at Arkansas State, where he led the Red Wolves to back-to-back 20-win seasons and one of the most successful stretches in program history, including a conference title and postseason appearance.

Providence Athletic Director Steve Napolillo said Hodgson’s energy, recruiting ability and experience navigating the evolving landscape of college athletics made him a strong fit.

“Bryan is a winner, and we are looking forward to the start of a new era in Friartown,” Napolillo said.

Prior to becoming a head coach, Hodgson served as an assistant at Alabama under Nate Oats, helping the Crimson Tide secure multiple top recruiting classes and NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Sweet 16 runs. He also spent time on staff at Buffalo, contributing to the program’s rise as a nationally ranked mid-major.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to be named the next head coach of the Providence Friars,” Hodgson said. “We’re going to build something that reflects the pride of this program and this city — tough, disciplined and relentless.”

Off the court, Hodgson is known for his work mentoring youth and supporting children in foster care. He was placed in foster care as an infant and later adopted, an experience that continues to shape his outreach efforts.

Hodgson will be formally introduced at a public press conference Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Mullaney Gymnasium. The event is open to fans and media.

The hire comes as Providence approaches the 100th season of its men’s basketball program, with the Friars looking to return to consistent NCAA Tournament contention.
