Two remarkable discoveries at Narragansett Town Be Two remarkable discoveries at Narragansett Town Beach have sparked excitement and intrigue among beachgoers and marine scientists alike. Earlier this summer, brothers Oliver and Sebastian Martinez were enjoying a day at the beach when they unearthed a massive, fossilized shark tooth from the sand. Eager to learn more about their find, their parents contacted the Atlantic Shark Institute (ASI). Dr. Josh Moyer, a shark expert and collaborator with the ASI, identified the fossil as a great white shark tooth. The well-preserved specimen was estimated to be at least 10,000 years old and potentially millions of years old. Based on the tooth’s size, Moyer determined the shark it came from was about 15 feet long. Just weeks later, Narragansett Town Beach delivered yet another ancient treasure. South Kingstown resident Carline Shields was taking a morning walk when she spotted what she thought was a rock. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was another fossilized great white shark tooth. “I couldn’t believe it,” Shields said. “I’ve known Jon [Dodd] for years, so I immediately reached out to him.” Jon Dodd, Executive Director of the ASI, said he was shocked to receive a second report. “We’ve never had a call about teeth like this in Rhode Island, and now there are two from the same beach in just a few months. It’s amazing,” he said. Experts confirmed Shields’ discovery as another great white shark tooth, this one belonging to a shark estimated to be 18 to 20 feet long. Like the first, the fossil is believed to be tens of thousands to millions of years old. “What’s so exciting is not just the rarity of these finds, but that they both came from the same small stretch of beach,” Dodd said. “It raises so many fascinating questions about the history of our coastline.” The ASI encourages anyone who has found a similar fossil to reach out and share their discovery. “These finds are an incredible window into the past,” Dodd added. The Newport Historical Society announced that Dr. The Newport Historical Society announced that Dr. Akeia de Barros Gomes, a Newport native and scholar of anthropology and African American history, will lead its new center for Black History at the historic Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House. The center, supported in part by a leadership gift from philanthropists Edward W. Kane and Martha J. Wallace, is set to become a cornerstone in preserving and showcasing the stories of Newport’s Black community. de Barros Gomes joins @newporthistory after more than three years at Mystic Seaport Museum, where she most recently served as vice president for the American Institute for Maritime Studies. A distinguished researcher and recipient of the 2024 Eva Butler Scholar Award, she has been recognized for her work in uncovering and elevating hidden histories of Indigenous and African American communities. “There is no one better suited to lead this critical work than Akeia,” said Rebecca Bertrand, executive director of the Newport Historical Society. “Her deep ties to Newport, extensive scholarship, and curatorial experience make her the perfect leader for this initiative. “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday by far,” “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday by far,” says @calebandbroad’s Rich Willis. “You have one responsibility, to eat and drink all day. How bad can that be?” It’s been 10 years since the Middletown native opened his own Newport restaurant and started a new tradition, hosting his whole family, about 20 of them, in the space. “And the number may increase. If somebody’s not doing anything I want to make sure they have a place to go,” he said. This year, Caleb & Broad’s new chef, Kaitlin Boissonneau, will be joining the celebration along with her dad. “She’s our new rock star in the kitchen, taking our menu to the next level. Her flavors are spot on, and you can see the love of what she does and taste it in her dishes,” said Willis. The family and friends each bring an assigned dish, and Willis relishes the entire spread. “On Thanksgiving, I eat until I want to explode,” he says. Once the master of the mashies, whose secret was roasted garlic and locally sourced spuds, Willis said he’s graduated from potatoes to chief turkey roaster. This year, he’s planning on two birds, at 15 to 20 lbs. each, which he’ll brine for a couple of days with salt, sugar, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and minced garlic and roast at 325 degrees, bumping up the temp to 425 for the final 45 minutes. But it’s his mom who conjures his best childhood food memories annually with her homemade gravy and award-winning apple and pumpkin pies. “Desserts are my favorite,” he says. Willis said he’s most excited to share the holiday this year with his son who is now old enough to appreciate the occasion, and though 2024 marks the first year that his father, William Willis, aka “Pops,” who passed away in October, won’t be at the table, the adults will be raising a glass to his memory. “He always brought a bottle of Gentleman Jack,” Willis said. Jay Leno has proven once again that nothing can st Jay Leno has proven once again that nothing can stop him—not even a 60-foot fall. The 74-year-old former Tonight Show host turned heads at his latest comedy gig sporting an eye patch, a bruised face, and a broken wrist after an impromptu shortcut to dinner turned into a disaster. While staying at a Hampton Inn in Pennsylvania before a Pittsburgh show, Leno decided to skip the mile-and-a-half walk down the road and opted for a more “direct” route—down a steep hill. “I’m a little beat up,” Leno quipped to Inside Edition. “I fell 60 feet. Boom, boom, boom, boom.” The comedian said he hit several rocks on the way down, leaving him “all black and blue” and with a finger missing a nail. A rock also struck him in the eye, forcing him to wear an eye patch. When asked if he was worried about his vision, Leno shrugged it off. “It’ll be fine. I’m not worried about it,” he said. Amazingly, Leno went on stage just three hours later to perform for a packed house. “When you’ve got 2,600 people waiting on you, the show must go on,” he told TMZ. This latest mishap adds to Leno’s growing list of injuries in recent years. In early 2023, he suffered broken ribs, a collarbone, and cracked kneecaps after being knocked off his motorcycle. Just months before that, he endured severe burns when a fire broke out in his garage, leaving him hospitalized with injuries to his face, chest, and hands. Delta Air Lines is partnering with Shake Shack to Delta Air Lines is partnering with Shake Shack to offer its iconic cheeseburgers to First Class passengers on select flights, starting Dec. 1. The collaboration will debut on routes departing from Boston Logan Airport that are over 900 miles, with plans to expand to more U.S. markets in 2025. Passengers will have the option to pre-order a Shake Shack Cheeseburger as part of their in-flight meal. The Shake Shack Cheeseburger features a 100% Angus beef patty with cheese on a toasted potato bun. Passengers can customize their meal to include ShackBurger toppings like tomato, lettuce, and ShackSauce, served on the side. The meal also comes with chips, a Caesar salad, and a dark chocolate brownie inspired by Shake Shack’s dessert flavors. Passengers in First Class can pre-select the Shake Shack Cheeseburger using the Fly Delta app or an email link. Construction is underway on a new 2,800-square-foo Construction is underway on a new 2,800-square-foot Educational and Administrative Building on the historic campus of Trinity Church, a cornerstone of Newport’s architectural and spiritual heritage since 1726. The new structure, prominently situated along Mill Street and Queen Anne Square, marks a significant expansion for the church, blending historical reverence with modern functionality. The building will house two classrooms for the church’s growing Sunday School programs, a nursery, accessible clergy offices, committee meeting rooms, and a 1,500-square-foot terrace. Visible from the street, the steel frame of the structure is already in place, signaling rapid progress toward its anticipated completion in mid-2025. The building’s design, by architect Jeff Moniz Jr. and Melissa Breen of 2 Hands Studio, harmonizes with the existing campus. Its traditional materials and forms are complemented by a glass facade facing Queen Anne Square, symbolizing the church’s openness and engagement with the community. “This design bridges the historical language of Trinity’s campus with a forward-looking sensibility,” Moniz explained. “The glass facade embodies the church’s desire to connect with Newport in meaningful ways.” A milestone celebration on Sunday, November 17, 2024, marked the culmination of 12 years of planning. Children from the Sunday School donned Trinity-branded hard hats emblazoned with the phrase “We’re Building!” while Interim Rector Timothy Safford led prayers and blessings.
