For his Community Service Project, Dylan chose to tackle something deeply personal—the fight against cancer. 🩷 In 2021, he lost his grandmother to this terrible disease.
🩷 In 2023, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. But thanks to amazing doctors and treatments, she is now cancer-free. Inspired by her recovery and determined to do more, Dylan created @cuts4acure and spent his entire summer and fall mowing lawns and doing yard work—donating 100% of his earnings to cancer research. It was a heart-pounding finish at Toppa Field on S It was a heart-pounding finish at Toppa Field on Saturday, as Salve Regina’s defense stood tall to secure a narrow 31-30 victory over Norwich. After building a comfortable 31-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Seahawks were forced to weather a dramatic Cadets’ comeback attempt that came down to the final play. The Seahawks started strong, with running back Justan Luzzi punching in a 7-yard TD early in the first quarter. Norwich quickly answered with a 90-yard touchdown pass from Landon Beecher to Henri Bourque, tying the game at 7-7. From there, it was back and forth. Salve grabbed the lead again with an 8-yard TD run from Jacob Hernandez, but Norwich responded with a field goal. The Seahawks extended their advantage with a 33-yard field goal from Nathan DiRado, and just before halftime, quarterback A. Bellizzi engineered a 15-play, 85-yard drive, capped by a 3-yard TD pass to Max Mazzella. At the break, Salve led 24-17. The third quarter was all Seahawks. Luzzi’s 2-yard touchdown run gave Salve a two-touchdown lead, while the defense kept Norwich quiet, putting Salve in a strong position to close it out. But Norwich wasn’t done. A Devin DeJesus interception returned for a touchdown brought the Cadets within a touchdown. Then, with less than two minutes to go, Jehric Hackney exploded for a 44-yard touchdown run, pulling Norwich within 31-30. The Cadets went for the win with a two-point conversion, but Salve’s defense held firm, sealing the victory. Salve’s kicker Nathan DiRado finished a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points, and finished the season 18-of-19 on the year. The Rams (9-2, 6-1 CAA Football) scored 20 unanswered points, capped by defensive tackle Westley Neal Jr.’s game-saving blocked field goal as time expired. Trailing 17-0 at halftime, Rhody came alive in the third quarter. Running back Malik Grant broke loose for a 42-yard touchdown on the opening drive, then added a 1-yard score after Braden Price intercepted a UAlbany pass. Despite a blocked extra point, the Rams cut the deficit to 17-13 entering the fourth. The turning point came when quarterback Hunter Helms hit Marquis Buchanan for a 30-yard pass, plus a 15-yard penalty for a horse-collar tackle. Grant finished the drive with his third touchdown, a 7-yard run that gave Rhode Island a 20-17 lead with 9:36 left. Rhody’s defense dominated down the stretch, recording five sacks and forcing two interceptions. Neal’s blocked field goal sealed the Rams’ first unbeaten home season since 1985 and tied the program’s record for regular-season wins. Grant finished with 110 rushing yards and three touchdowns, bringing his season total to 963 yards and 10 scores. Buchanan had six catches for 132 yards, leaving him just 103 yards shy of 1,000 for the season. Linebacker A.J. Pena notched two sacks, moving into second all-time for career sacks at URI with 24.5. This week, Poulsen learned his fate—a 30-year sentence at the Adult Correctional Institution (ACI). Drug Bust Yields Cash, Coke, and Guns:
A tip led Newport’s Narcotics Unit to two residences last week, uncovering a stash of cocaine, cash, and firepower. On November 14, detectives executed search warrants at the homes of Glenda Mendez, 48, and Edgardo Torres, 26. The results? A Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, two loaded magazines, 16 grams of cocaine, and a jaw-dropping $32,750 in suspected drug money. Mendez, of Third Street, was hit with charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and using a firearm in a crime of violence. Torres, of Girard Avenue, faces possession with intent to sell a controlled substance. Cocaine Trafficking Takedown: The long arm of the law reached all the way to Puerto Rico in a months-long investigation into a major drug trafficking ring. Newport detectives and DEA agents busted Martin Lopez Rodriguez, 46, and Freddy Almanzar, 18, in Newport on November 15. The duo was caught red-handed with two kilograms of cocaine—a haul valued at $100,000. Both men are now facing serious charges, including delivery of more than one kilogram of cocaine and conspiracy to distribute. A seasoned public servant with more than three decades of experience, Caruolo is set to take on the role starting Jan. 6, 2025. Caruolo’s public service career began with the Newport Police Department, where he served for 22 years and retired as a lieutenant in 2014. Over the past decade, he has worked as the Director of Public Safety and Community Relations at Salve Regina University, managing a $1.3 million budget and leading a team of 32 public safety professionals. In his new position, Caruolo will provide management support to Newport’s bumbling and unqualified City Manager Colin Kennedy, a well-known opponent of the 1st Amendment and a free press. Caruolo’s role will include overseeing daily operations and strategic planning across Newport’s city departments. A longtime Aquidneck Island resident, Caruolo has built a reputation as a dedicated leader. While with the Newport Police Department, he commanded the Special Response Team and coordinated emergency plans for major events, earning accolades such as two Chief’s Service Awards, five Meritorious Service Awards, and 31 commendation letters. At Salve Regina, Caruolo was instrumental in fostering stronger relationships between the university and the local community. His leadership shone during the 2019 gas outage when he collaborated with city officials to address the crisis. He also spearheaded initiatives to improve communication and engagement between students and residents and served as president of the Rhode Island College and University Public Safety Association.
