NEWPORT — The green beer flowed, the bagpipes play NEWPORT — The green beer flowed, the bagpipes played, and the Newport Police Department’s arrest log from St. Patrick’s Day Parade weekend reads like a greatest-hits album of parade day mischief.

After stripping out the names and focusing strictly on the charges, a clear theme emerges: some people brought their Irish spirit… and forgot the part about following the rules.

Here’s how parade day stacked up.

Parade Day Offense Totals

Open Container in Public: 14
Disorderly Conduct: 9
Simple Assault and/or Battery: 4
Domestic Violence – Simple Assault: 1
Domestic Violence – Disorderly Conduct: 1
Resisting Arrest: 1
DUI: 1
Minor in Possession of Alcohol: 1
Willful Trespass: 1
Animals, Restraint Of: 1

The Big Picture

The runaway champion of the day? Open containers, accounting for 14 of the arrests. Apparently the memo that you can’t walk around with a drink in public during the parade didn’t quite make it into everyone’s group chat.

Next up was disorderly conduct, clocking in at nine charges, suggesting that at least a few parade-goers celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a little too much enthusiasm.

Things escalated later in the day with four simple assault charges, plus a handful of more serious issues including domestic violence, resisting arrest, and one DUI.

Final Score

All told, parade day produced 34 total charges across the city — a relatively small number considering tens of thousands of people pack downtown Newport for the annual celebration.

In other words: most people enjoyed the parade responsibly.

But if the arrest log proves anything, it’s this:

In Newport on St. Patrick’s Day, the bagpipes aren’t the only thing getting loud. 🍀
