In a rare display of unity, Senators Sheldon White In a rare display of unity, Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Rick Scott (R-FL) have reintroduced the Sunshine Protection Act, aiming to make Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent and end the twice-yearly clock changes. For Whitehouse, the issue is personal to his constituents. “Many Rhode Islanders look forward to that March weekend when we ‘spring forward’ and ditch the afternoon darkness of the cold winter months,” he said. “I’m glad to help lead the bipartisan push to end the antiquated practice of adjusting our clocks twice a year and finally make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide.” Scott, who signed a similar law as Florida’s governor, says Americans are fed up with changing their clocks. “I hear from Americans constantly that they are sick and tired of changing their clocks twice a year,” Scott said. “I’m excited to have President Trump back in the White House and fully on board to LOCK THE CLOCK so we can get this good bill passed and make this common-sense change that will simplify and benefit the lives of American families.” The bill already has support from 13 other senators. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) sees it as a boost to public health and the economy, while Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) highlights states’ rights. Longtime DST advocate Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) adds: “Let’s say goodbye to 4 PM winter sunsets!” Proponents cite big benefits: ☀️ More evening sunlight for outdoor activities 🚗 Fewer car accidents 🛍️ Boosted consumer spending 💪 Better health and well-being The Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate unanimously last Congress but stalled in the House. Colin Kennedy, Newport’s bumbling city manager a Colin Kennedy, Newport’s bumbling city manager and the poster child for being in over one’s head, suffered yet another public humiliation at Wednesday night’s city council meeting. In his latest attempt to stay relevant, Kennedy presented a plan to add a completely unnecessary stop sign at the intersection of Morton Avenue and Spring Street—a proposal the council swiftly and unanimously shot down with a scathing 7-0 vote. Kennedy, who has somehow failed his way into a position for which he’s laughably unqualified (according to Newport’s city charter), hasn’t even called Newport home for a year and is already proving himself an unmitigated disaster. “This was a solution looking for a problem,” Mayor Charlie Holder bluntly declared, summing up what everyone in the room was clearly thinking. This flop comes on the heels of yet another embarrassment for Kennedy - the city council lambasted him Wednesday night for illegally installing a stop sign at Third and Sycamore Streets without proper approval. That rogue move earned him a verbal smackdown, but it seems Kennedy just can’t stop tripping over himself in his misguided attempts at leadership. How long will Newport put up with this circus act? The naming of the Newport Skatepark stands as a fitting tribute to Kirby’s adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors. His family, friends, and community will now have a place to celebrate his life and carry on his legacy for generations to come.
