The effort, which began Tuesday, underscores the society’s commitment to preserving the architectural heritage of this National Historic Landmark. The gates, towering at 12 feet and weighing 5,600 pounds each, along with the crown and two side gates, were carefully removed by crane to allow for meticulous restoration work. Until temporary gates are installed, visitors to The Breakers will use an alternate entrance on Shepard Avenue. Decades of exposure to Newport’s harsh coastal elements—salt air, rain, and freezing winter ice—have taken their toll on the gates. Stratford Steel, a Connecticut-based firm specializing in historic metalwork restoration, has been contracted for the $500,000 project. Their process involves sandblasting each component to bare metal, applying a protective zinc thermal spray coating, and finishing with a marine-grade paint system. Severely corroded sections will be precisely replicated and replaced to maintain the gates’ original character. The restoration is slated for completion in April, just in time for the influx of spring visitors eager to explore the opulent summer residence of the Vanderbilt family. The Breakers, constructed in 1895, remains one of Newport’s most visited attractions, drawing nearly half a million guests annually. Part-time Newport resident and former late-night t Part-time Newport resident and former late-night talk show host, Jay Leno, has once again proven his dedication to community service during a crisis. Leno is using his own 1941 American LaFrance fire truck to bring relief to those working tirelessly to fight the wildfires that have ravaged parts of LA. On Monday, Leno took a break from his usual routine to serve first responders in the Pacific Palisades area, where fierce winds and fires have caused widespread destruction. Speaking with Anderson Cooper in an impromptu interview, Leno revealed his method of support. “We’re cooking for the crew,” he explained. “We’ve got a big barbecue going. They’re all getting boxed lunches, so we figured let’s get some hot food.” The comedian, known for his car collection, added a touch of humor to the situation, saying, “It’s good to have your own fire truck when you live in LA.” He has been driving the vintage truck to various relief sites, offering not just food but moral support to the firefighters and volunteers working long hours. Leno, who also volunteered at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday, expressed his admiration for the sense of community he’s seen during the disaster. “It’s unbelievable. A ‘special listening session’ is scheduled for Thursday, January 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Newport Public Library, where city officials will turn to residents to clean up the mess they’ve already made. For those who can’t make it, feedback is also being collected on a project website at www.CityofNewport.com/FutureBeach—because nothing screams well-thought-out urban planning like an online suggestion box. Easton’s Beach has been many things over the years: a rollercoaster, a saltwater pool, and a spired pavilion that once evoked the glamour of a bygone coastal era. Now, it stands mostly as a cautionary tale of what happens when out-of-towners think they know what’s best. The latest chapter in this saga? The demolition of the snack bar and carousel building—apparently step one in the grand plan, or lack thereof. With funding now secured through the 2024 infrastructure bond, the city has promised a new vision for the beach. Hopefully, this vision no longer includes Councilor Khamsyvoravong entertaining the idea of selling the beach to the highest bidder. Whether this will be another short-lived iteration or the start of a lasting solution is anyone’s guess.
