RIP Scott Mello

On February 19, 2017, Scott T. Mello, age 49, died at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA with his family at his side. Born on September 30, 1967 and a native of Portsmouth, RI, Scott rallied against his diagnosis of Stage Four Pancreatic Cancer for six months.

He leaves his parents Manuel T. Mello and Mary Claire (Smith) Mello of Somerset, MA., formerly of Portsmouth, RI. He also leaves his two sisters, Elizabeth A. Stetson of Sun River, OR and Stacey Mello Seanor of Orange County, CA. Scott is survived by his three wonderful children, Jack T. Mello, Mikaela R. Mello, and Rachael A. Mello of Douglas, MA. In addition, Scott leaves several nieces and nephews, Casey Braley, Bryan Braley, Courtney Braley, David Stetson, and Trent Seanor. He also leaves his cousins, Leslie Heller, Brenna Mello, Aidan Larson, Emma Larson, and grandniece Savannah Braley.

Scott attended Portsmouth Public Schools and enjoyed Scouting and Baseball. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island. During his college years, he served as Lifeguard at Second Beach, Middletown, RI for several years. After graduation, Scott worked in Marketing in MA where he lived for many years. He also lived in Oxford, MA and was most recently employed by Home Depot. Scott was a dedicated runner and participated for several years in many organized race events. His final race event was the Spartan Race in 2016 in MA. Scott was also an avid reader and woodworker. He delighted in the many hours he spent on his boat with his children and his two dogs, Niko and Duncan. Scott was a staunch Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

A graveside Celebration of Life Service was held at St. Mary’s Church in Portsmouth on Friday, March 3, 2017. In Scott’s memory, donations may be made to any Pancreatic Cancer Research Center or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
