The city’s proposed budget—more than $120 million in taxpayer spending—was quietly delivered to the City Council last week. But for the residents footing the bill? It’s being withheld until Friday afternoon, just hours before the first budget workshop begins Monday.
That’s not transparency. That’s a tactic.
When asked where the budget could be found, the response was simple: it would be posted “sometime Friday afternoon.” No urgency. No acknowledgment of the timeline. No explanation for why the public was being left behind.
But here’s what makes it worse: according to multiple sources, council members already had the full document in hand last week. And under the city’s own Capital Improvement Plan, the budget was supposed to be available for public review at the same time.
It wasn’t.
Instead, residents are being told they can either wait for a late-Friday online release—or physically go to City Hall, where a single hard copy will be available.

So let’s be clear about what that means. A 500+ page budget. One copy. Limited hours. And a ticking clock before discussions begin on how to allocate more than $120 million.
If that sounds like meaningful public access, it isn’t.
