The City of Newport and Aquidneck Land Trust have announced the Second Annual Miantonomi Exploration Days!
Established as a World War One memorial park, Miantonomi Park includes Miantonomi Hill, the highest point in Newport. The Hill, once the seat of power for the Narragansett Indians, has housed colonial beacons, revolutionary war fortifications, and finally, a 1929 memorial tower designed by Meade, McKim and White. With the assistance of the Aquidneck Island Land Trust, Sunset Hill has been added to the park with its revolutionary war earthen redoubt.
On Sundays through the month of August the Miantonomi Tower will once again be open from 11am to 2pm, allowing visitors to climb to the highest point on Aquidneck Island. In addition, patrons are encouraged to explore the trails, wildlife and historic sites in Newport’s largest park.
“We are excited to once again host Miantonomi Exploration Days. The view of the City afforded by climbing the tower truly is spectacular, and it’s a good opportunity for people to explore all the other amenities offered by this great Newport park” said Scott Wheeler, Buildings and Grounds Supervisor/Tree Warden.
In addition to exploring the park, visitors are encouraged to take their picture while enjoying their day at Miantonomi and sharing to social media using the hashtag #nptexplorationdays. Those who do share their picture will get the opportunity to be featured on the City of Newport’s Instagram.
