Edward Patrick McCarthy, 69, of Middletown passed away Friday, December 11, 2015 in Newport Hospital with his family by his side.
He was the husband of Janet Kelly McCarthy for 43 years.
Born in Newport, he is the son of the late Florence and Mary (Smith) McCarthy.
Mr. McCarthy was a humble, unassuming gentleman who was proud to be a Newporter. He chose to spend his life in Newport graduating from De La Salle and then receiving his BA from Providence College and his M.Ed. from Salve Regina University. After serving our country during Vietnam, he returned home to raise his family and begin his 30 year teaching career for the Newport School System retiring in 1999. One of his great joys in retirement was sharing his knowledge of local history as a tour guide for Viking Tours.
Beside his wife he leaves his daughter Kelly M. Sporer and her husband Timothy of Northborough, MA and his son Rian McCarthy and his wife Samantha of Tiverton. He was Eddie Papa to Meredith Michael Sporer and Caleb Edward Sporer.
He was the father of the late, Michael E. McCarthy.
Calling hours will be held in the funeral home on Monday, December 14, 2015, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM.
His funeral will be held on, Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 9:00AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street at Memorial Boulevard, Newport.
Burial with military honors will be held in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.
