While NAM touts the changes as part of a broader strategic overhaul, the swift turnover raises questions about the museum’s stability and future direction. Adding to the pressure, NAM’s financial health has been a persistent concern. According to its 990 tax forms, the museum reported losses totaling over $1.9 million between 2020 and 2023. In 2023 alone, NAM lost $578,251, following losses of $597,091 in 2022, $478,815 in 2021, and $250,370 in 2020. These numbers underscore the stakes of the museum’s ongoing efforts to restructure and stabilize. In a statement, NAM Board Chair Ellie Harrison Voorhes painted a rosy picture, saying, “The Newport Art Museum has been a cultural cornerstone in Newport for 113 years, and the current strategic plan ensures we will remain so for the next century. Our refreshed approach is already yielding exciting results and gives us a clear roadmap for the future.” A centerpiece of the restructuring is the creation of a new artistic director role, filled by the highly talented Danielle Ogden, who previously served as executive director. Ogden’s efforts to align the museum’s permanent collection with contemporary art and community engagement have been a defining feature of her leadership. However, her transition to this newly defined role leaves a vacancy at the top, with Ruth Taylor stepping in as interim executive director while the museum searches for a permanent replacement. Ogden will now focus on exhibitions, programs, and partnerships, as well as managing visiting curators and the museum’s exhibition schedule. The restructuring aims to sharpen the museum’s artistic vision. Alongside leadership shifts, NAM has restructured its staff, making new hires and promoting existing employees to align with its strategic goals. The Newport Restaurant Group announced Monday that The Newport Restaurant Group announced Monday that Foodlove Market, its chef-driven café and marketplace in Middletown, will permanently close its doors on January 25. The popular spot, known for its catering services, grab-and-go meals, pizzas, restaurant-style dishes, and curated groceries, was born out of the uncertainty of the pandemic. The group aimed to create a fresh concept to meet the changing dining habits during a time of upheaval in the hospitality industry. “Foodlove was a risk,” read a heartfelt letter to customers and the Aquidneck Island community. “We are proud to have created something locals loved and that felt truly different from our other concepts. But despite growing sales year over year, the concept has continued to realize unsustainable losses.” The group expressed gratitude to loyal customers and the dedicated staff, many of whom have been with Foodlove since its inception three years ago. The market will remain open until January 25, offering customers a final chance to enjoy its offerings. While Foodlove Market is closing, Newport Restaurant Group isn’t stepping away from the space. Later this year, a new restaurant concept will take its place. According to recent court filings in Rhode Island According to recent court filings in Rhode Island federal court, after years of legal battles, a $2 million settlement has been reached with National Grid over the catastrophic gas outage that left thousands of residents on Aquidneck Island without heat or hot water during the brutal winter of 2019. Attorney Brian Cunha of Brian Cunha & Associates negotiated this significant win for the residents and businesses of Newport and Middletown. The outage, caused by dangerously low gas pressure, affected around 7,000 homes and businesses, some of which were rendered uninhabitable. 💰 The settlement will bring much-needed relief, including $1.1 million for low-income heating assistance to help those still struggling with energy costs. The funds will be distributed through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to support both residents and local businesses. “This settlement is about holding companies accountable and ensuring justice for those who suffered during this unprecedented event,” says Attorney Cunha. Newport residents just scored a rare win for their Newport residents just scored a rare win for their wallets. The Newport City Council approved a change to Easton’s Beach parking fees, eliminating costs for residents with a valid parking sticker while imposing steeper rates on non-residents. Starting this year, locals can park for free at Easton’s Beach year-round, a perk that previously required a $50 seasonal beach pass—or $35 for seniors. The decision, approved at the Jan. 8 council meeting following recommendations from the Beach Commission and the Recreation Department, shifts the financial burden to out-of-towners. Non-residents will now pay $25 to park on weekdays, up from $15, and $35 on weekends and holidays, up from $25. Non-resident seasonal passes will also see a hike, rising from $100 to $150. But the increases don’t stop with cars. Motorcyclists and bus drivers face their own spikes, with motorcycles seeing the sharpest jumps. Daily weekday rates for motorcycles soar from $5 to $25, while weekend rates jump from $10 to $30. Buses now pay $50 to park on weekdays, up $10, and $100 on weekends, a $20 hike.
