Today, we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Ma Today, we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and nonviolence reshaped America. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. King emerged as a guiding force in the civil rights movement, advocating for change through peaceful resistance. From the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the Birmingham campaign, his leadership inspired millions to stand against racial injustice. In 1963, during the March on Washington, he delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, envisioning a nation where people are judged by their character, not the color of their skin. Dr. King’s impact went beyond words. His efforts were instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, dismantling segregation and securing equal voting rights. Despite relentless threats and violence, he remained steadfast in his belief that nonviolence was the most powerful tool for change. His advocacy extended to economic justice and global peace, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all struggles for equality. Tragically, Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, but his dream lives on. Dr. King once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” As we reflect on his words, let us honor his memory by committing ourselves to building a better, more inclusive society. His dream of a world where individuals are judged by their character, not the color of their skin, continues to light the way forward. Today, let’s not just remember Dr. King’s legacy—let’s live it. Aquidneck Island locals gathered at St. George’s Aquidneck Island locals gathered at St. George’s Ice Rink on Jan. 19 to attend the 4th Annual Guns ‘N Hoses charity hockey tournament. Members of Aquidneck Island police departments faced off against firefighters in a spirited match. Proceeds from the game benefited 3-year-old Rémi Vassallo and his family. Rémi, born with a complex congenital heart defect, has undergone multiple surgeries and requires a tracheostomy tube and ventilator to assist with his breathing. Despite the many cheers for Liam Leys, the Aquidneck Island Police team secured their fourth victory in the annual charity match, winning 7-6. The event was spearheaded by Elysha and Dave Guerriero, with Sgt. Guerriero coaching the Newport Whalers. Elysha remarked that each year they strive to make the event bigger and better for the community. Children enjoyed the “Chuck a Duck” competition during intermission, where dozens of kids lined up to throw their rubber ducks onto the ice. Colten Costa emerged as the winner, with his duck traveling the farthest. In addition to supporting the Vassallo family, a portion of the funds raised will be donated to NAMI RI through NoSolo. NAMI RI promotes mental health awareness for first responders. While we all heard in the rumor mill that this mos While we all heard in the rumor mill that this most likely would happen, there were still those moments around midnight—getting into bed, wanting to aimlessly scroll—when out of habit, you reached for TikTok only to be met with that sinking feeling. Cue the slight panic attack and separation anxiety as millions of users confronted life without the app. TikTok is making a comeback after going dark for millions of American users. Following a dramatic nationwide ban, the app is now partially restored thanks to President-elect Trump, who promised to delay the restrictions with an executive order set to take effect Monday. TikTok’s official statement credits Trump for providing “clarity and assurance” to service providers, ensuring the app stays accessible to its 170 million U.S. users and supports over 7 million small businesses relying on the platform. “We stand for the First Amendment and will work with the administration on a long-term solution to keep TikTok in the U.S.,” the company stated. The platform first went offline Sunday morning after Congress passed legislation requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell its stakes by January 19, 2025. Without a deal in place, the Supreme Court upheld the ban, which critics argue undermines free speech. Partial access is now available, with some users reporting limited functionality. Influencers and content creators, however, remain in limbo, unable to upload new content. Scott Sutton, CEO of Later Media, confirmed via X (formerly Twitter), “TikTok is back on desktop, but content and engagement history are still missing.” What’s next for TikTok?
