The @newportpd.ri has become the first law enforce The @newportpd.ri has become the first law enforcement agency in Rhode Island to sign onto the 30×30 Initiative, a nationwide pledge to improve the representation and experiences of women in policing. The initiative sets a goal of having women comprise 30% of recruit classes by 2030 while addressing broader workplace equity and inclusion. As part of the pledge, the department is committing to implement policies that are free of bias and promote equitable hiring, retention, and promotion of women officers. The effort is grounded in social science research that links greater gender representation in law enforcement to improved public safety outcomes. “This pledge means that Newport Police Department is actively working toward improving the representation and experiences of women officers in our agency,” said Chief Ryan Duffy. “I am happy to announce our agency is the first in Rhode Island to take the pledge. We look forward to working and learning from agencies across the country who share our priority in improving our police culture.” Women currently make up just 13% of sworn officers and 3% of police leadership nationwide, a disparity that researchers say has significant public safety implications. Studies show that women officers use less force, are named in fewer complaints, and are viewed by communities as more honest and compassionate. They also achieve better outcomes for crime victims, particularly in sexual assault cases, and make fewer discretionary arrests. The Newport Police Department joins more than 400 law enforcement agencies nationwide in this effort, spanning municipal, state, county, university, and federal jurisdictions. “We are grateful to the Newport Rhode Island Police Department for committing to being a part of this growing movement,” said Maureen McGough, co-founder of the 30×30 Initiative and former U.S. Department of Justice policing expert. “Advancing women in policing is critical to improving public safety outcomes. Salve Regina University has finalized an agreement Salve Regina University has finalized an agreement with the City of Newport and local residents to construct a new oceanside residence hall, a project expected to provide significant benefits for both the university and the local community. The facility, designed to house 205 undergraduate students, will be built at the corner of Shepard and Lawrence Avenues, near the historic William Watts Sherman House. As part of the agreement, the university will install sidewalks along Shepard Avenue to improve pedestrian safety. Additionally, Salve has designated a property on Victoria Avenue for potential redevelopment as a natural-grass athletic field. The new residence hall is a key component of Salve Regina’s strategic plan to increase on-campus housing, fostering a vibrant university culture while addressing a critical need in Newport. By accommodating more students on campus, the project is expected to make more homes and apartments available, relieving pressure on Newport’s competitive rental market. “We are grateful to our neighbors and the City of Newport for this agreement and believe that the new residence hall will be a wonderful addition to our campus and to the local community to which we’re so closely connected,” said Salve president Dr. Kelli J. A quick stop to grab a coat turned into a frustrat A quick stop to grab a coat turned into a frustrating setback for local musician James Montgomery, who discovered his essential performance equipment was stolen from his driveway Saturday night. Montgomery said the theft happened within three minutes outside his home on Division Street when he went inside to put on a heavier coat. His gig bag, containing 14 harmonicas, three microphones, cables, and a wireless system, was taken while he prepared for a performance at The Cooke House. “Thank God for neighbors who found some of my stuff on the lawn at the Arnold Cemetery on Pelham Street,” Montgomery shared in a social media post. However, several items remain missing, including an SM-57 microphone, an XLR microphone cable, and a small black box with a LEKATO wireless kit. @jamesmontgomeryblues described the missing box as about 6 inches by 4 inches and urged neighbors in the Historic Hill area to keep an eye out for the gear. “I learned a hard lesson,” he wrote. “Even on our Hill, a perfectly safe area, one has to be careful to guard against petty criminals!” Community members have rallied behind Montgomery, pledging to help in the search and offering support. On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was tragically shot and killed in front of The Dakota, his home in NYC. A Beatles fan, disillusioned by Lennon’s fame and comments about being “more popular than Jesus,” planned the horrific act for months. That same evening, the fan even got Lennon’s autograph on his Double Fantasy album. Later, as John and Yoko Ono returned home, the fan fired five shots, four of which struck Lennon. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Lennon was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m. Lennon was only 40 years-old. John’s music, activism, and legacy continue to inspire generations. The Rams (11-3) fought valiantly in a game marked by pivotal moments and missed opportunities but ultimately fell short in their quest for the quarterfinals. Rhode Island appeared to strike early when Shawn Harris electrified the crowd with an 87-yard punt return touchdown late in the first quarter. However, the score was nullified after officials flagged the Rams for a fair-catch infraction. The reversal was one of two first-half touchdowns called back due to penalties, including a Harris touchdown reception that was also erased. Momentum shifted dramatically on the next snap. Mercer’s Myles Redding intercepted Hunter Helms and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 7-0 lead. Rhode Island clawed back as Ty Groff drilled a 17-yard field goal on the final play of the half, narrowing the deficit to 7-3. The Rams surged ahead late in the third quarter when Helms connected with Marquis Buchanan on a spectacular 56-yard touchdown down the left sideline, making it 10-7. Buchanan’s play capped off a stellar performance that included 11 catches for 119 yards. But Mercer dominated the final quarter. Whitt Newbauer found Adjatay Dabbs for a 4-yard touchdown pass early in the period, putting the Bears back on top 14-10. A 24-yard field goal by Reice Griffith extended the lead to 17-10 with just over six minutes remaining. Rhode Island showed resilience, mounting a promising drive that included a 34-yard pass from Helms to Greg Gaines III, pushing the Rams deep into Mercer territory. However, the drive stalled at the 32-yard line after consecutive stops on third-and-2 and fourth-and-2. Mercer took over and ran out the clock to secure the win. Despite the loss, Rhode Island’s season will be remembered for its 11 wins and deep playoff run, a testament to the team’s growth and resilience. This one wasn’t just another game—it was about bragging rights and proving who runs the state. It wasn’t easy. After jumping out to an early lead, Rhody found itself trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half. Jaden House was the lifeline, scoring 14 of his 18 points before the break to keep the Rams within striking distance. The second half? That’s when the Rams woke up. Sebastian Thomas absolutely TOOK OVER, scoring 17 of his 19 points after halftime. Whether it was floaters, pull-up jumpers, or dagger threes, Thomas delivered every time we needed him. But it wasn’t just him. David Green battled in the paint, finishing with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. David Fuchs had a career night with 9 points, 7 boards, and clutch defensive plays.
