WaterFire Providence has announced its 2025 season WaterFire Providence has announced its 2025 season schedule, featuring six full lightings, two partial lightings, and four “Starts at Sunset” events on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge. The season begins Thursday, May 15, with a sunset lighting, and the first full lighting set for Saturday, May 31. The 2025 lineup marks @waterfireprov’s 30th anniversary and includes themed celebrations honoring Rhode Island educators, breast cancer survivors, and military veterans. A special Independence Day lighting will also return on Friday, July 4. Additional full lightings are scheduled for August 9 (Clear Currents Paddling Night), September 27 (RI Educators), October 4 (Breast Cancer Awareness), and November 1 (Salute to Veterans). Each event features onshore programming and vendors, beginning about 90 minutes before sunset. Partial and basin lightings include a Memorial Park event on June 19 and a basin lighting on August 18. “Starts at Sunset” events will illuminate the Van Leesten Memorial Bridge on May 15, July 17, October 30, and New Year’s Eve, December 31. The City of Newport will celebrate Arbor Day with The City of Newport will celebrate Arbor Day with a special tree-planting ceremony on Thursday, April 24, at 4:30 p.m. at the newly constructed Newport Skatepark in the John Chafee Recreation Area. This year’s event holds special significance as the community gathers to honor the memory of Seamus Kirby. Kirby will be remembered with the official dedication of the skatepark in his name. A London Plane tree will be planted in his honor during the ceremony, serving as a lasting tribute to his legacy. City officials and the Newport Tree and Open Space Commission see the tree not only as a memorial, but also as a symbol of growth, spirit, and community roots. But this isn’t just a solemn occasion.
