The New England Patriots announced three finalists The New England Patriots announced three finalists for the team’s 2025 Hall of Fame class Thursday, with wide receiver Julian Edelman and kicker Adam Vinatieri joining returning finalist Logan Mankins. Edelman and Vinatieri are both newly eligible for induction. Mankins, a standout offensive lineman, is a finalist for the third consecutive year after making the cut in both 2022 and 2023. Fans can now vote for the nominee they believe is most deserving of enshrinement at www.patriots.com/hof. Voting is open through midnight EDT on Wednesday, April 30. The winning selection will be announced later that week. The fan-selected inductee will join former head coach Bill Parcells, who was named a Hall of Fame contributor by Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft during the NFL’s annual league meetings earlier this month. Parcells becomes the 36th member of the Patriots Hall of Fame. A date for the induction ceremony will be announced once finalized with both honorees. Established in 2007, the Patriots Hall of Fame honors the franchise’s greatest figures. Finalists are selected by a panel of media, alumni, and team staff. Fans then cast the deciding vote — a distinction that makes New England the only NFL franchise to give supporters the final say. In addition to the annual fan vote, a senior selection committee and Kraft have added eight Hall of Famers — three through committee and five as contributors. The Preservation Society of Newport County will ho The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a public forum on May 8 at Rosecliff to address mounting threats to the city’s urban forests, with a special focus on beech leaf disease (BLD), a fast-spreading and often fatal condition affecting American and European beech trees. Titled “Iconic Trees of Newport II,” the event begins at 6 p.m. and is free to attend with advance registration. Last year’s forum drew a full house, and organizers expect another strong turnout. The event is presented in collaboration with Bartlett Tree Experts, the Newport Tree Conservancy, the City of Newport, Salve Regina University, Aquidneck Island Land Trust, and the Preservation Society. “This is a complex challenge, and educating the public through forums like this is essential,” said Trudy Coxe, CEO of the @newport.mansions. “We’re proud to stand with so many committed partners in protecting Newport’s historic trees.” Speakers will include local officials, nonprofit leaders, and scientists on the frontlines of research. Among them: Scott Wheeler, Newport’s Superintendent of Parks; Natasha Harrison and Joe Verstandig of the Newport Tree Conservancy; and Terry Sullivan of the Aquidneck Island Land Trust. Experts from Bartlett Tree Experts, including company president Jim Ingram, will share the latest treatment breakthroughs. First identified in Ohio in 2012, BLD is caused by a parasitic nematode and has now spread to over a dozen states and parts of Canada. Researchers at Bartlett’s labs have recently developed both injection and foliar treatments with promising results. “We have made progress replanting public lands,” Wheeler said. “But we’re losing ground in our neighborhoods. Our food and beverage community doesn’t follow the island’s protracted winter calendar and some of our summer faves are already cranking up their kitchens, conjuring warmer days ahead. The indoor/outdoor @bellesnewport, located alongside the massive sailing ships at the @safeharbornewportshipyard, opened for the season in March for breakfast and lunch daily from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. Build your own omelet or Benedict for breakfast or go for buttermilk pancakes or pearl sugar waffles. For lunch: burgers, panini, salads, lobster rolls and a kids menu. Belle’s is a gem and slipping in before the season gets underway is how the pros do it. Nothing says Newport in season like fresh seafood and @hookednewport, the next door, sister restaurant to @viestesimplyitalian in Wellington Square is open and ready to bring it Wed. through Sat. beginning at 4:30 p.m. Besides the raw bar, Hooked serves apps like grilled octopus, oysters Rockefeller, crispy tuna rolls and fried oysters followed by fresh fish entrees straight off the grill, seafood linguine, Scampis, Marsalas, Picattas and Fra Diavolo. Got a landlubber in your party? Substitute the fish for chicken. The @newportlobstershack on Long Wharf is the spot for live lobsters caught by a coop of our own local lobstermen. The Shack’s kitchen has also fired up its grills for the freshest, prepared seafood in town, from lobster bites to rolls, lobster dinners and bisque, fish and chips, calamari and more. Put on your fisherman’s knit and hunker down at one of the covered picnic tables for your feast Fri. to Sun. from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (lobster market open at 10 a.m.). Daffodils and lobsters en masse?
