The comments mark his sharpest attack yet on the renewable energy source, which he criticized as an eyesore, a drain on taxpayer dollars, and harmful to the environment. Trump, speaking to reporters, claimed wind turbines “litter our country” and likened them to garbage. “Like dropping paper. Like dropping garbage in a field. In a period of time, they turn to garbage,” he said. “Most expensive energy ever. They only work if they get subsidies.” The president-elect singled out a 200-turbine project planned off New Jersey’s coast, a reference to a joint effort by EDF Renewables and Shell. He also suggested wind turbines were linked to an uptick in whale deaths, citing 14 whale strandings in Massachusetts this season. “The windmills are driving the whales crazy. Obviously,” Trump said. President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday tha President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration intends to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” a move he described as both symbolic and justified. “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump said during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort. “It has a beautiful ring to it. The Gulf of America—what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate, very appropriate.” Trump cited the United States’ significant economic activities in the region as the primary reason for the proposed change. “We do most of the work there, and it’s ours,” he said. He also used the moment to reiterate his criticisms of Mexico, accusing the country of failing to curb the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. “Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” Trump said, calling the neighboring nation “a very dangerous place” and alleging that it is “essentially run by the cartels.” The proposal for the Gulf’s name change comes on the heels of other suggestions from Trump, including taking control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. When asked whether he would rule out military or economic measures to achieve these goals, Trump replied, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two.” Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene quickly voiced her support for the name change. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Greene pledged to act on Trump’s vision. “I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!” she wrote on X. That’s a total of FOUR Heritage-class cutters heading to Newport over the coming years. These ships will replace two 270-foot medium endurance cutters currently based in Newport while complementing the three buoy tenders that have long called this area home. To the Editor: I was deeply disappointed by the r To the Editor: I was deeply disappointed by the recent actions of certain Newport City Council members who, after years of stressing the urgent need for workforce housing and criticizing previous councils for inaction, voted against the proposed workforce housing project at the former Coggeshall School. In doing so, they have perpetuated the very problem they once condemned—kicking the can down the road. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), workforce housing serves individuals earning 80–120% of the Area Median Income (AMI). For Newport, that translates to annual incomes ranging from $73,000 to $111,000 for a single person—what is commonly referred to as the “missing middle.” The Coggeshall proposal adhered to these HUD specifications, fulfilling a critical housing need. Yet council members Khamsyvoravong, Smyth, Pinnock, and Carlin failed to acknowledge the clear language of the project contract. Instead, they muddied the discussion with vague and inconsistent references to “affordable,” “workforce,” and “subsidized” housing, creating confusion even among informed residents. Meanwhile, the historic Coggeshall School remains in a state of dangerous disrepair—plagued by lead, asbestos, mold, broken windows, and a collapsing roof. By rejecting this project, Newport forfeits not only $1 million in revenue from the school and adjacent lots but also the potential for $100,000 in annual property tax revenue. The developer behind this proposal has a proven track record, demonstrated by the success of workforce housing at the Cranston-Calvert site. Rather than vilify him on social media, he should be commended for his efforts to address Newport’s pressing housing needs. Last month’s Newport City Council meeting was nothing short of an embarrassment. Instead of striving to improve our community for all income levels, some council members seemed more interested in pandering to a vocal “not in my backyard” minority. The @speakeasy_barandgrill crew headed to Cancun for an annual staff trip, back to open their doors on Jan. 10. The @theblackpearlrestaurant’s will remain closed until around Parade Day in March. In the 5th Ward, @zeldasnewport is currently on hiatus, re-opening Jan. 16, @scalesandshellsnpt is now closed through Feb. 11, and @hookednewport is on break until April 1. Meanwhile, if you’re taking a little belly breather after season’s eatings, your gut will thank you for a bowl of @diegosnewport’s brothy, deeply flavorful, and authentic Mexican chicken tortilla soup with pulled chicken, chopped veggies, and crispy tortilla strips. A squeeze of lime, and you’re cured of all that ails you. A similar restorative elixir can be found in @bottegabocconi’s Ribollita, a hearty Tuscan soup chock full of vegetables and cannellini beans, thickened with bread, ready to take home and re-heat. But when a bowl of soup won’t cut it, go straight to @thequenchernewport for the house-made tagliatelle Funghi. The noodles are luxuriously bathed in a silky, sage truffle cream and pecorino sauce, studded with meaty roasted mushrooms and bits of butternut squash so tender that they add to the luxurious mouthfeel without imparting too much sweetness.
