As first reported by Newport Buzz, federal immigra As first reported by Newport Buzz, federal immigration agents conducted a targeted operation Wednesday morning, detaining one individual near Thames Street and Cotton Court. Eyewitnesses saw about six armed ICE agents dressed in black masks, black tops, and camouflage pants making the arrest. The City of Newport confirmed the operation, stating, “We can confirm that a targeted federal immigration action did take place earlier today… focused on a single individual rather than a widespread operation.” Officials have not released further details. Following the incident, rumors spread that ICE agents had entered local schools, prompting Superintendent Coleen Burns Jermain to reassure families. “No ICE agents or any federal agents came to our schools or inquired about our students or their families at any time,” she wrote. “None were seen around any of our schools, and all our students were safe.” Concerns arose after Rogers High School students received alarming texts at the end of the day. Administrators, responding to their fears, arranged for them to be transported home in school vans. At Thompson Middle School, parents of high schoolers requested similar arrangements for their younger children, leading to some TMS students also being driven home instead of taking the bus. Jermain emphasized that ICE was never present at any school and there were no disruptions at Pell Elementary. She acknowledged that the dismissal changes, meant to ease fears, inadvertently fueled misinformation. “I know these are difficult and emotional times,” she wrote, apologizing for any distress caused. A Jamestown police officer narrowly escaped disast A Jamestown police officer narrowly escaped disaster over the weekend when a suspected impaired driver nearly struck him during a roadside stop, authorities said. Officer Liam Robberson was assisting a motorist on Route 138 with his emergency lights activated when a speeding vehicle approached nearly hitting him. Acting quickly, Robberson moved to the front of the stopped car to avoid being hit. He then returned to his patrol car, pursued the driver, and successfully pulled them over. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. This winter and spring, The Preservation Society o This winter and spring, The Preservation Society of Newport County is offering an exclusive look into the meticulous work that sustains some of America’s most treasured historic homes. Through a series of limited programs, “Lifting the Curtain: Behind the Scenes of Museum Work,” members of the curatorial staff and resident scholars will share their expertise with the public. Running through April, these programs provide an opportunity to delve into the curatorial, conservation, and preservation efforts that take place behind the grand facades of the @newport.mansions. Some events feature specialized tours, while others offer an intimate examination of objects from the museum’s collections. Many of these programs have limited attendance, and some have already sold out. The series also includes two live lectures at Rosecliff, which will be available via Zoom for remote participants. On Thursday, February 6, at 6 p.m., Leslie B. Dr. Williams will examine how early photographers navigated the evolving boundaries between documentation and artistic expression.
