Rhode Island football ended a 39-year championship Rhode Island football ended a 39-year championship drought Saturday, claiming its first-ever Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Football title with a 35-21 victory over Bryant. The Rams (10-2, 7-1 CAA) not only secured the league crown but also set a program record with their 10th regular-season win. The triumph marks Rhode Island’s seventh overall conference title, the first six coming in the Yankee Conference. Running back Malik Grant was unstoppable, rushing for 204 yards and three touchdowns while adding a 4-yard touchdown reception. His 13 rushing touchdowns this season tie the program’s single-season record. The Rams took an early 6-0 lead on two Ty Groff field goals. Bryant (2-9, 0-7 CAA) responded with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brennan Myer to Drew Montez to move ahead, 7-6. Rhody answered as a 26-yard catch by Marquis Buchanan set up Grant’s first touchdown, putting URI back on top, 13-7. The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with a 50-yard touchdown run by Dylan Kedzior, making it 14-13 in a fast-paced second quarter. URI seized control in the second half. Grant’s 47-yard run on the first play set up a touchdown catch to make it 20-14. After a Braden Price interception, Grant capped a short drive with a 1-yard score, extending the lead to 28-14. Bryant cut the deficit to seven in the fourth quarter, but the Rams iced the game with a 15-play, 72-yard drive, ending with Grant’s fourth touchdown. Buchanan had eight catches for 84 yards, leaving him 19 shy of 1,000 for the season. Linebacker Cole Brockwell, whose father played on URI’s 1985 title team, recorded five tackles. Groff contributed nine points with two field goals and three extra points. With just six seconds remaining, Boston College trailed the University of Miami 45-41 in a game that had already delivered more drama than most seasons. Standing near midfield, Flutie, barely 5’9” but with a heart twice the size of the Orange Bowl, took the snap. He scrambled to his right, evading Miami’s fierce pass rush, then unleashed a moonshot—a pass that hung in the humid Florida air like destiny itself. Forty-eight yards away, in a crowd of four defenders, Gerard Phelan found a pocket of space in the end zone. As the ball descended, time seemed to stop. By Wendy Logan On November 5, the citizens of New By Wendy Logan On November 5, the citizens of Newport elected native son and two-term councilman for Ward 2, Charlie Holder, to an At-Large seat by a margin that clinched him the Mayor’s chair. His years on the council, high-visibility roles leading Midtown Oyster Bar and the Gardiner House, his experience as a young athlete and later a coach, and his status as a true “local,” are the foundation for a promising tenure. And there’s another factor that adds to the formula. Check that dimpled, Cheshire Cat grin for a hint. Charlie Holder is smart, levelheaded, and deliberate, but also charming, creative, and funny. You won’t believe what his Thanksgivings look like. “Thanksgiving at our house has now become ‘what will the bird look like this year?’” he told Newport Buzz. “I try and get as creative as possible to make dinner fun. I’ve done bacon-wrapped turkey, stuffed with chicken wings (what??), and Hawaiian style with pineapple and ham. Two years ago, I had two quails flying over the turkey, which was stuffed with mac and cheese. Last year was the Charcu-turkey!” The second-generation Newporter has fond memories of his childhood turkey days. “Our family Thanksgiving … was turkey and trimmings, with the one exception being my Yia Yia (Greek Grandmother) would also have lamb and Greek pastries. My whole family would go to her house on the holidays.” Today, the family celebrates at his mom’s house, the menu more traditional. “Except for my Turkey creations,” he said with that megawatt smile. “My favorite dish as a kid is still my favorite today: my mother’s chourico stuffing.” While continuing to serve as director of operations at Gardiner, Holder will be sworn in as Mayor, along with the new council, on December 1. He addressed the outcome of the election, and voters’ desire for change, thoughtfully. Two remarkable discoveries at Narragansett Town Be Two remarkable discoveries at Narragansett Town Beach have sparked excitement and intrigue among beachgoers and marine scientists alike. Earlier this summer, brothers Oliver and Sebastian Martinez were enjoying a day at the beach when they unearthed a massive, fossilized shark tooth from the sand. Eager to learn more about their find, their parents contacted the Atlantic Shark Institute (ASI). Dr. Josh Moyer, a shark expert and collaborator with the ASI, identified the fossil as a great white shark tooth. The well-preserved specimen was estimated to be at least 10,000 years old and potentially millions of years old. Based on the tooth’s size, Moyer determined the shark it came from was about 15 feet long. Just weeks later, Narragansett Town Beach delivered yet another ancient treasure. South Kingstown resident Carline Shields was taking a morning walk when she spotted what she thought was a rock. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was another fossilized great white shark tooth. “I couldn’t believe it,” Shields said. “I’ve known Jon [Dodd] for years, so I immediately reached out to him.” Jon Dodd, Executive Director of the ASI, said he was shocked to receive a second report. “We’ve never had a call about teeth like this in Rhode Island, and now there are two from the same beach in just a few months. It’s amazing,” he said. Experts confirmed Shields’ discovery as another great white shark tooth, this one belonging to a shark estimated to be 18 to 20 feet long. Like the first, the fossil is believed to be tens of thousands to millions of years old. “What’s so exciting is not just the rarity of these finds, but that they both came from the same small stretch of beach,” Dodd said. “It raises so many fascinating questions about the history of our coastline.” The ASI encourages anyone who has found a similar fossil to reach out and share their discovery. “These finds are an incredible window into the past,” Dodd added. The Newport Historical Society announced that Dr. The Newport Historical Society announced that Dr. Akeia de Barros Gomes, a Newport native and scholar of anthropology and African American history, will lead its new center for Black History at the historic Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House. The center, supported in part by a leadership gift from philanthropists Edward W. Kane and Martha J. Wallace, is set to become a cornerstone in preserving and showcasing the stories of Newport’s Black community. de Barros Gomes joins @newporthistory after more than three years at Mystic Seaport Museum, where she most recently served as vice president for the American Institute for Maritime Studies. A distinguished researcher and recipient of the 2024 Eva Butler Scholar Award, she has been recognized for her work in uncovering and elevating hidden histories of Indigenous and African American communities. “There is no one better suited to lead this critical work than Akeia,” said Rebecca Bertrand, executive director of the Newport Historical Society. “Her deep ties to Newport, extensive scholarship, and curatorial experience make her the perfect leader for this initiative. “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday by far,” “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday by far,” says @calebandbroad’s Rich Willis. “You have one responsibility, to eat and drink all day. How bad can that be?” It’s been 10 years since the Middletown native opened his own Newport restaurant and started a new tradition, hosting his whole family, about 20 of them, in the space. “And the number may increase. If somebody’s not doing anything I want to make sure they have a place to go,” he said. This year, Caleb & Broad’s new chef, Kaitlin Boissonneau, will be joining the celebration along with her dad. “She’s our new rock star in the kitchen, taking our menu to the next level. Her flavors are spot on, and you can see the love of what she does and taste it in her dishes,” said Willis. The family and friends each bring an assigned dish, and Willis relishes the entire spread. “On Thanksgiving, I eat until I want to explode,” he says. Once the master of the mashies, whose secret was roasted garlic and locally sourced spuds, Willis said he’s graduated from potatoes to chief turkey roaster. This year, he’s planning on two birds, at 15 to 20 lbs. each, which he’ll brine for a couple of days with salt, sugar, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and minced garlic and roast at 325 degrees, bumping up the temp to 425 for the final 45 minutes. But it’s his mom who conjures his best childhood food memories annually with her homemade gravy and award-winning apple and pumpkin pies. “Desserts are my favorite,” he says. Willis said he’s most excited to share the holiday this year with his son who is now old enough to appreciate the occasion, and though 2024 marks the first year that his father, William Willis, aka “Pops,” who passed away in October, won’t be at the table, the adults will be raising a glass to his memory. “He always brought a bottle of Gentleman Jack,” Willis said.
