The Old Canteen, a cherished cornerstone of Rhode The Old Canteen, a cherished cornerstone of Rhode Island’s dining history, is serving its final meals this weekend, marking the end of an era for generations of locals and visitors who cherished its old-world charm. Audrain’s Heritage Restaurant Group, which purchased the storied establishment, confirmed the closure to The Providence Journal. Nestled in Providence’s “Historic Federal Hill,” The Old Canteen has been a culinary institution since 1956, when Joseph Marzilli opened its doors. Over the decades, the restaurant became synonymous with classic Italian-American cuisine, offering diners a taste of tradition in its signature pink dining room. For nearly seven decades, families gathered here for special occasions, politicians brokered deals over veal parmesan, and couples toasted milestones with glasses of Chianti. It was a place where memories were made—and where time seemed to stand still. But now, the lights will dim for good. Wally’s Wieners, a popular hot dog and smashburger spot with locations in Newport, will take its place. The second floor will host The Copper Club, a concept borrowed from Wally’s second-floor space in Newport. Both are expected to open by March. Federal Hill, once the heart of Providence’s Italian-American community, has seen its share of change. But the loss of The Old Canteen feels particularly poignant, as it symbolizes the vanishing of a simpler, more authentic era. The restaurant’s closure marks the final chapter in a 69-year story. As we bid farewell to The Old Canteen, we also say goodbye to a piece of Providence’s heart. Audrain’s Heritage Restaurant Group, led by Nick Schorsch, has been expanding since relocating to Newport from New York City over a decade ago. Its holdings include Newport Craft Beer, La Forge Restaurant, Brick Alley Pub, Flo’s Clam Shacks, The Reef, The Red Parrot, and more. Rep. David A. Bennett is proposing a plan to raise Rep. David A. Bennett is proposing a plan to raise Rhode Island’s minimum wage to $20 an hour by 2030, but critics are already questioning whether the move will help or hurt the state’s economy. The bill, 2025-H 5029, lays out a gradual increase, starting at $16 on Jan. 1, 2026, and climbing by $1 each year until reaching $20 by Jan. 1, 2030. Bennett (D-Warwick, Cranston) says the hikes are essential to keeping up with the cost of living. “This legislation will keep our minimum wage rising in a predictable, stable way that allows Rhode Island’s businesses to plan while giving our constituents livable wages,” Bennett said. But some worry the plan could backfire. Small businesses already struggling with inflation and labor shortages might be forced to cut jobs, reduce hours, or even close their doors as they grapple with rising payroll costs. While labor leaders like Patrick Crowley, president of the Rhode Island AFL-CIO, argue that regular increases boost economic security for workers and provide predictability for businesses, not everyone is convinced. “If wages go up too fast, it can lead to layoffs, higher prices for consumers, or businesses deciding to relocate,” said one Newport business owner, who asked not to be named. “It’s a balancing act, and I’m not sure this plan strikes the right balance.” Rhode Island’s minimum wage last rose to $15 on Jan. 1, 2025, matching Massachusetts. But Connecticut is already ahead, with a $16.35 minimum indexed to inflation. Proponents of Bennett’s bill argue the Ocean State needs to keep up, while skeptics question whether chasing regional wage competition is worth the risk to small businesses. Bennett, who has championed every minimum wage increase in Rhode Island since 2012 when minimum wage was $7.40, insists the plan is sound. “We’ve done this before, and it’s worked,” he said. Police officers and firefighters from Aquidneck Is Police officers and firefighters from Aquidneck Island are gearing up for a thrilling match on the ice this weekend, all for a worthy cause. The annual Guns N’ Hoses Charity Hockey Game is set to take place Sunday afternoon at St. George’s School’s ice rink, with proceeds benefiting a local 3-year-old boy and his family. Rémi Vassallo, who was born with a complex congenital heart defect, has undergone several surgeries in his young life and requires a tracheostomy tube and ventilator to help with his breathing. The charity event will support him and his family as they navigate these medical challenges. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. after doors open at 3:00 p.m. at St. George’s School, located off Purgatory Road in Middletown. Admission is by donation, with a suggested contribution of $10 per person or $20 per family. The event promises to be action-packed, as the Police team aims to defend their three-game winning streak against the Firefighters. In addition to the exciting hockey action, there will be opportunities to support two important causes. A portion of the event’s proceeds will go toward NAMI RI, supporting mental health awareness for first responders. The Preservation Society of Newport County has lau The Preservation Society of Newport County has launched a significant restoration project to revitalize the iconic main gates of The Breakers, Newport’s most renowned Gilded Age mansion. The effort, which began Tuesday, underscores the society’s commitment to preserving the architectural heritage of this National Historic Landmark. The gates, towering at 12 feet and weighing 5,600 pounds each, along with the crown and two side gates, were carefully removed by crane to allow for meticulous restoration work. Until temporary gates are installed, visitors to The Breakers will use an alternate entrance on Shepard Avenue. Decades of exposure to Newport’s harsh coastal elements—salt air, rain, and freezing winter ice—have taken their toll on the gates. Stratford Steel, a Connecticut-based firm specializing in historic metalwork restoration, has been contracted for the $500,000 project. Their process involves sandblasting each component to bare metal, applying a protective zinc thermal spray coating, and finishing with a marine-grade paint system. Severely corroded sections will be precisely replicated and replaced to maintain the gates’ original character. The restoration is slated for completion in April, just in time for the influx of spring visitors eager to explore the opulent summer residence of the Vanderbilt family. The Breakers, constructed in 1895, remains one of Newport’s most visited attractions, drawing nearly half a million guests annually.
