(Sorry about the double former headline typo 🤷‍♂️) A former employee of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Middletown, Rhode Island, appeared in U.S. District Court in Providence on Monday, facing a federal charge of transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. According to a criminal complaint unsealed in court, Luis Sanchez Pardella, 38, of Newport, allegedly made a series of disturbing phone calls between July 2022 and February 2023 to at least eight former NUWC colleagues. In one voicemail, Pardella reportedly threatened, “I will kill you and your wife when I see you on the street.” Federal prosecutors also allege that between December 2022 and February 2023, Pardella made multiple threatening calls to the Portsmouth Police Department. In the calls, he reportedly claimed an officer and his wife “will be going to jail,” and declared that the department was corrupt. In another call, he allegedly said, “Write down [officer’s wife] is dead. The wife of one of your cops is dead.” Pardella was released following his court appearance, under conditions that include GPS monitoring and a no-contact order with the identified victims. The investigation was led by the FBI, with support from the Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport, and Providence police departments, as well as the Federal Air Marshal Service. #nuwc #newportri #navy #newportbuzz #middletownri
