NEWPORT — The green beer flowed, the bagpipes play NEWPORT — The green beer flowed, the bagpipes played, and the Newport Police Department’s arrest log from St. Patrick’s Day Parade weekend reads like a greatest-hits album of parade day mischief.

After stripping out the names and focusing strictly on the charges, a clear theme emerges: some people brought their Irish spirit… and forgot the part about following the rules.

Here’s how parade day stacked up.

The Big Picture

The runaway champion of the day? Open containers, accounting for 14 of the arrests. Apparently the memo that you can’t walk around with a drink in public during the parade didn’t quite make it into everyone’s group chat.

Next up was disorderly conduct, clocking in at nine charges, suggesting that at least a few parade-goers celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a little too much enthusiasm.

Things escalated later in the day with four simple assault charges, plus a handful of more serious issues including domestic violence, resisting arrest, and one DUI.

Final Score

All told, parade day produced 34 total charges across the city — a relatively small number considering tens of thousands of people pack downtown Newport for the annual celebration.

In other words: most people enjoyed the parade responsibly.

But if the arrest log proves anything, it’s this:

In Newport on St. Patrick’s Day, the bagpipes aren’t the only thing getting loud. 🍀
