Newport’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade returns this Saturday, March 15, promising a lively celebration packed with bagpipes, marching bands, and plenty of Irish cheer. The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. from Newport City Hall (43 Broadway), with staging beginning at 9 a.m. The parade will snake its way through downtown, rolling down Broadway, through Washington Square, onto Thames Street, America’s Cup Avenue, and back to Thames before wrapping up at St. Augustin’s Church on Carroll Avenue. Parking & Traffic Heads-Up
If you’re planning to drive, be warned: parking restrictions will be in effect from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. along key parade routes, including Broadway, Thames Street, and America’s Cup Avenue. Limited public parking is available at the Gateway Center and Waterfront Lot on Mary Street, but expect heavy traffic and plan ahead. Keeping the Party in Check
Newport Police will be out in full force—both in uniform and plainclothes—making sure the revelry stays safe and family-friendly. That means strict enforcement of city ordinances, including no open containers, underage drinking, or disorderly conduct. A Parade Tradition with a Punch
Leading the procession will be Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy, wielding a bit of Irish history—a traditional shillelagh. The wooden walking stick, a gift from the Dublin Police Department in 1971, has been carried by every Newport Police Chief in the parade since. Amanda Marie Marks, a beloved daughter, sister, an Amanda Marie Marks, a beloved daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at the age of 36 after a brief illness with her family at her side. She was born on October 9, 1988, to Philip & Christina Marks. Amanda was a kind and compassionate person, known for her passion and talent in both soccer and softball. She was a graduate of Tiverton High School and the New England Institute of Technology where she received her Associate Degree in Business Management. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she also leaves her brother Benjamin Marks of Tiverton and her maternal grandmother Marie Murray LeVan of Harrisburg, PA. She is predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Fredrick LeVan, and her paternal grandparents Dr. Antonio and Constance Marks. She also leaves many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Relatives and Friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, March 27, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Friday, March 28, 2025, at 10:00 am in St. Christopher’s Church, 1554 Main Road, Tiverton. A total lunar eclipse, commonly called a “blood A total lunar eclipse, commonly called a “blood moon,” will be visible across New England in the early hours of Friday, March 14 offering a celestial spectacle for night sky enthusiasts. The eclipse begins at 11:57 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, with totality peaking at 2:30 a.m Friday. The moon will remain fully immersed in Earth’s shadow for 65 minutes before the event concludes around 6 a.m. The best viewing time is expected at 2:59 a.m. Why the Moon Turns Red During a total lunar eclipse, Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow that darkens and colors the lunar surface. NASA explains that the reddish hue occurs because sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the moon, in a process similar to how sunrises and sunsets appear on Earth. “It’s as if all the world’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the Moon,” NASA said. Phases of the Eclipse The event unfolds in five phases. It starts with the penumbral phase, where Earth’s outer shadow causes a subtle dimming. Next, the partial eclipse begins as the moon enters the darker umbral shadow. Totality follows, with the moon fully engulfed and glowing red. The final two phases see the moon gradually emerging from the shadow, regaining its usual brightness. How to Watch No special equipment is required to enjoy the eclipse, but binoculars can enhance the experience.
