Elaine Mary Schwartz (Segerson), 86, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away on April 13, 2025, at the Newport Hospital.
Born on September 28, 1938, in Newport, Rhode Island, Elaine was the daughter of the late John Francis Segerson and the late Mary (Martin) Segerson.
Elaine pursued her education at Salve Regina College, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. Early in her professional life, she dedicated herself to teaching grade school students-a role that reflected her nurturing spirit and patience. After stepping away from the workforce to raise her four children, Elaine later returned to work by embracing one of her greatest passions: cooking.
Teaming up with one of her closest friends, Brenda Margolis, Elaine began a new chapter in the kitchen at Sig’s. There, she became a beloved figure in the community as she prepared meals that became staples of the Fifth Ward and catered countless events across Aquidneck Island.
Elaine found joy not only in cooking but also in hosting get-togethers. She loved to entertain, and you could always rely on her for a great story. Her home was always open and always full. Many neighborhood kids considered her their second mom and their home away from home, because she always made everyone feel welcome.
She loved to travel, and she frequently took her children to places like New Hampshire, Hershey, Pennsylvania, and, of course, Disney.
Elaine also loved to read, you would always find a book on her bed next to her iPad, which she used to play word games as well as enjoy her friends’ posts and pictures.
Elaine is survived by her son Jerold Schwartz of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter Stacey Omishakin and her husband Gabriel of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; son Kenneth Schwartz and his wife Jen of Middletown, Rhode Island; son-in-law James McEvoy of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; her grandchildren: Keith, Tyler, Kyle, and Dylan Schwartz; Cameron and Aidan McEvoy; Kylie and Ryan Schwartz; and her great-grandchildren who adored her.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jerold Schwartz, her sisters Marilyn and Jacqueline Segerson, and her daughter Kristen McEvoy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
