Patrick Henry Horgan II passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 14, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Harry Redmond Horgan and Charlotte Collins Horgan. Patrick was born on July 12, 1932 in Newport R.I. He attended Roger’s High School, graduated from Tabor Academy and received his BA from Providence College.
Patrick was a fourth generation Newporter whose passion was the preservation of his family’s properties throughout Newport and Jamestown. He was the President and Proprietor of the Opera House Theater and an owner of Christie’s Restaurant.
He served as a Board Member of many organizations: RI Hospital Trust Bank, Hazard’s Beach Club, Newport Rotary Club, Navy League, Sinking Fund of Newport, and Visiting Nurses. He was a proud member of Shake-A-Leg Miami, Providence College Alumni Association, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Preservation Society, Newport Historical Society and Newport Irish Historical Society. He was an avid sports fan and passionate about golf.
Patrick (affectionately known as “Paddy” to his family) was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and a friend to all. He is survived by his wife of 62 years and best friend Mary, their children Cindy (Chris Bushnell), Harry (Susie), Patrick (Margaret) and Kevin, and their grandchildren Meghan, Chris, Andy, Eli, Henry, Nina, and Kenna.
He had friends in many circles including restaurant keepers, merchants, bankers, local businessmen and others from all walks of life but also those disadvantaged souls who so often found him a generous benefactor in their times of need. He had a heart and a hand for all. He was a fun loving man with a zest for life, quick with a joke or funny story and had a kind word for everyone. His sense of humor kept everyone laughing.
Most of all, he found his greatest pleasure working in his garden at home overlooking the Lily Pond. He will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
A special note of gratitude to his doctors, nurses and the Hospice Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, (especially Suzanne), for their incredible work, attentive care and kindness through his journey over the last four years.
