✨ Newport Time Warp ✨ We’re back with ano ✨ Newport Time Warp ✨ We’re back with another Newport Time Warp, this time featuring the beautiful Washington Square! Established in 1639, Washington Square has long been Newport’s central hub, known initially as the Mall or Parade. By the mid-18th century, it became the civic and commercial center of Newport, with key buildings like the Colony House and Brick Market. Uniquely for New England, Washington Square featured secular buildings in prominent locations, reflecting Rhode Island’s commitment to religious liberty. In the 19th century, the square was landscaped and became home to mansions, including the Buliod-Perry House, which later became the residence of naval hero Oliver Hazard Perry. By the 1880s, Washington Square had shifted to commercial buildings, though some mansions remained, like Perry’s house and the Rathbun-Gardner-Rivera House, which had been converted into a bank. Today, many of these historic buildings are still standing, like the 1760 Brick Market (now the Museum of Newport History), the Opera House, and the Perry statue dedicated in 1885. In 1960, the park was renamed Eisenhower Park to celebrate President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who spent summers in Newport. He was even here for the dedication ceremonies! @salveregina is celebrating a major achievement as @salveregina is celebrating a major achievement as three of its students have been selected for Siemens’ prestigious Financial Leadership Development Program internships for summer 2025. Georgia Costello, Emily Capocelli, and Taylor Pendleton will join a highly competitive cohort of only 30 undergraduate students from across the country, earning this opportunity from a pool of thousands of applicants. The students earned their internships after excelling at Siemens’ “Super Day” event, a highly competitive selection process that included interviews and a case study competition held at the company’s U.S. hub in Atlanta, Georgia. With Salve being the smallest institution represented, this achievement is especially impressive. The three students will participate in a 12-week paid internship, gaining hands-on experience with Siemens, a leading global technology company. They’ll learn to analyze business operations, support financial decision-making, and work across a variety of departments. The program runs from May through August 2025, with assignments taking place in Siemens’ offices across the U.S. The Siemens internship also offers a potential career pathway. High-performing seniors will have the opportunity to interview for Siemens’ FLDP rotational program, where they can pursue careers in roles like financial analyst, business process specialist, accountant, and data analyst. The students’ success is a testament to their hard work and the support they’ve received from Salve Regina’s faculty. Dr. Teresa Starzecki, assistant professor of business and economics, played a key role in coordinating the students’ preparation for the Siemens selection process, along with Dr. Melissa Varao and faculty members Rita Marcotte and Sam Sacco. Arts & Cultural Alliance board chair Susan Woythal Arts & Cultural Alliance board chair Susan Woythaler shared her excitement at the return of Arts Around the Fire. This beloved series, which began at the Clarke Cooke House years ago, offers artists and art lovers a chance to connect and hear about upcoming projects. November’s gathering was hosted by Sardella’s Italian Restaurant, and as always, no reservations were needed—just a shared love for the arts. Harle Tinney, a longtime @acanpt board member, introduced the evening’s speaker, Federico Santi, chair of the city’s Public Sculpture Commission. Tinney praised Santi’s work and encouraged attendees to visit his Spring Street shop, The Drawing Room, a treasure trove for art and antiques enthusiasts. Santi shared the story behind the Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt Memorial Fountain, a hidden gem in Vanderbilt Park. Originally designed as a horse trough and bubbler to honor Mr. Vanderbilt, the fountain has suffered wear over the years and now faces a restoration cost of $99,000. Paul Szapáry, a Vanderbilt descendent, described Alfred as a true icon, recounting his heroic sacrifice aboard the RMS Lusitania. The Public Sculpture Commission is not only working to preserve the Vanderbilt Fountain but is also cataloging Newport’s statues and fountains. They hope to raise awareness and funds through innovative ideas like QR codes for visitors to explore the city’s public art. Rhode Island football ended a 39-year championship Rhode Island football ended a 39-year championship drought Saturday, claiming its first-ever Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Football title with a 35-21 victory over Bryant. The Rams (10-2, 7-1 CAA) not only secured the league crown but also set a program record with their 10th regular-season win. The triumph marks Rhode Island’s seventh overall conference title, the first six coming in the Yankee Conference. Running back Malik Grant was unstoppable, rushing for 204 yards and three touchdowns while adding a 4-yard touchdown reception. His 13 rushing touchdowns this season tie the program’s single-season record. The Rams took an early 6-0 lead on two Ty Groff field goals. Bryant (2-9, 0-7 CAA) responded with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brennan Myer to Drew Montez to move ahead, 7-6. Rhody answered as a 26-yard catch by Marquis Buchanan set up Grant’s first touchdown, putting URI back on top, 13-7. The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with a 50-yard touchdown run by Dylan Kedzior, making it 14-13 in a fast-paced second quarter. URI seized control in the second half. Grant’s 47-yard run on the first play set up a touchdown catch to make it 20-14. After a Braden Price interception, Grant capped a short drive with a 1-yard score, extending the lead to 28-14. Bryant cut the deficit to seven in the fourth quarter, but the Rams iced the game with a 15-play, 72-yard drive, ending with Grant’s fourth touchdown. Buchanan had eight catches for 84 yards, leaving him 19 shy of 1,000 for the season. Linebacker Cole Brockwell, whose father played on URI’s 1985 title team, recorded five tackles. Groff contributed nine points with two field goals and three extra points. With just six seconds remaining, Boston College trailed the University of Miami 45-41 in a game that had already delivered more drama than most seasons. Standing near midfield, Flutie, barely 5’9” but with a heart twice the size of the Orange Bowl, took the snap. He scrambled to his right, evading Miami’s fierce pass rush, then unleashed a moonshot—a pass that hung in the humid Florida air like destiny itself. Forty-eight yards away, in a crowd of four defenders, Gerard Phelan found a pocket of space in the end zone. As the ball descended, time seemed to stop.
