Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha has jo Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha has joined a coalition of 20 attorneys general in suing the Trump Administration to halt its plan to dismantle the Department of Education. The lawsuit, filed today, seeks to prevent what the coalition describes as a “targeted destruction” of the agency that serves millions of students nationwide. The legal action follows the administration’s March 11 announcement that it plans to fire approximately 50% of the Dept of Ed workforce, a move seen as the first step toward shutting down the department entirely. “The Trump Administration’s unlawful attack on the Department of Education is an attack on children from all walks of life across this country,” Neronha said. “These massive layoffs will severely undermine the Department’s ability to perform basic functions, functions upon which American families rely.” The attorneys general argue that dismantling Dept of Ed would have devastating consequences, particularly for students with disabilities and those from low-income families. The lawsuit contends that the Trump Administration lacks the legal authority to unilaterally dismantle the Dept of Ed, as it was created and funded by Congress. The coalition is asking the court to block the administration from moving forward with its plans. Joining Neronha in the lawsuit are attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, Vermont, and the District of Columbia. #donaldjtrump #newportbuzz
