When Boston liquor giant Gordon’s and the White When Boston liquor giant Gordon’s and the White Elephant Hotel attempted to hijack the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival, they underestimated festival owner Nancy Bean’s resilience. Last month, a federal court ruled in Nancy’s favor, confirming her rightful ownership and clearing the path for her event to return May 14-18, 2025. Federal Judge Leo T. Sorokin called Gordon’s actions “false and misleading,” part of an attempt to undermine Nancy’s business. Despite the setbacks, Nancy refused to back down. In an era that seems defined by David and Goliath scenarios, Nancy Bean refused to be a victim. “I didn’t give up. I put my battle gloves on,” she said. And won. With the White Elephant backing out and Gordon’s forced to issue corrections, Nancy is ready to move forward. @nantucketwineandfood will now be headquartered at the Nantucket Hotel. “This gives us the chance to work with other wonderful venues, keep our dates and move forward. We lost a lot of pre-production time (having to) pause as we dealt with the litigation, but now we’re full steam ahead. From the talent to the venue partners to sponsors and new chefs and restaurants, people have been incredibly supportive and have strong feelings about how it all went down. We’re plunging ahead to make up for lost time and excited about this year’s fest,” she said. 
 While the legal battle delayed production and caused confusion, the festival’s heart is stronger than ever. “This has forced us to think more broadly,” Nancy shared. “We’ve had incredible support, and this year’s festival will be as wonderful as ever, with exciting new elements.” 
 Nancy acknowledged the lasting impact of the attempted takeover. “Even though the court ruled in our favor, it’s been messy. Days after Audrain’s La Forge Restaurant informed the beloved pianist his time behind the keys had come to an end, the decision has been reversed. Manuel will continue to serenade diners every Friday and Saturday night, much to the delight of his loyal fans. The reversal comes after an outpouring of community support for the local legend. Manuel took to Facebook to thank those who rallied behind him, writing, “Thank you, thank you, thank you, everyone, for the absolutely overwhelming show of love and support that I have received. Everyone should be as lucky as me to hear such beautiful things said about them while they’re living. I highly recommend it. Love to all.” Audrain’s decision seems to underscore the power of community voices in preserving local traditions. In a rare display of unity, Senators Sheldon White In a rare display of unity, Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Rick Scott (R-FL) have reintroduced the Sunshine Protection Act, aiming to make Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent and end the twice-yearly clock changes. For Whitehouse, the issue is personal to his constituents. “Many Rhode Islanders look forward to that March weekend when we ‘spring forward’ and ditch the afternoon darkness of the cold winter months,” he said. “I’m glad to help lead the bipartisan push to end the antiquated practice of adjusting our clocks twice a year and finally make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide.” Scott, who signed a similar law as Florida’s governor, says Americans are fed up with changing their clocks. “I hear from Americans constantly that they are sick and tired of changing their clocks twice a year,” Scott said. “I’m excited to have President Trump back in the White House and fully on board to LOCK THE CLOCK so we can get this good bill passed and make this common-sense change that will simplify and benefit the lives of American families.” The bill already has support from 13 other senators. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) sees it as a boost to public health and the economy, while Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) highlights states’ rights. Longtime DST advocate Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) adds: “Let’s say goodbye to 4 PM winter sunsets!” Proponents cite big benefits: ☀️ More evening sunlight for outdoor activities 🚗 Fewer car accidents 🛍️ Boosted consumer spending 💪 Better health and well-being The Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate unanimously last Congress but stalled in the House.
