RIP Pat Maher

Patrick Michael Maher, 73, of Newport died Monday, February 6, 2017 surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.

Born on September 7, 1943 in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late James L. and Mary (Toppa) Maher. He was the husband of Lynne (Sartini) Maher.

Pat was born and raised in Newport, graduated from De La Salle and earned a degree in Economics from the University of New Mexico in 1968. He was co-owner of Safeway Systems, Inc. that his father started. He continued on as a consultant for Waste Management. He also owned and operated the Canfield House for more than ten years. He served on the Board of Directors at the James L. Maher Center. Pat loved sailing, fishing, golf and enjoyed skiing and traveling. He was a talented cook and welcomed others to his table, his chance to share his gregarious outlook on life.

In addition to his wife of 26 years, he is survived by his children, Michelle Maher, her husband Robert Merwin of Golden, CO; Shannon Maher, her husband James Murphy of Newport; Patrick Maher Jr., his wife Heather MacGillivary of Lakewood, CO; Ian P. Maher and Devyn Maher of Newport; and his grandchildren, Dylan Maher, Lily Merwin, Abigail Murphy, Nathan Murphy, and August Maher.

He also leaves his siblings, James L. Maher Jr. of Middletown, Steven Maher of Portsmouth, Michael Maher of Newport, and Alexandra Kelly of Newport; and Mary Murphy Walsh, whom he embraced as family. He will be profoundly missed by his canine companions Yogi and Boo Boo.

He was the brother of the late Peter Razza Sr., Anthony Razza and Mary Ann Maher.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017, from 4:00-8:00pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

His funeral will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017, at 10:00am at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11:00am in St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport.

Burial will take place at St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the James L. Maher Center Development Fund, PO Box 4390, Middletown, RI 02842.
